The 5th graders are talented authors.  They just completed their second assignment -- a report on a state of their choice.  Our next project will be poems for Grandparents' Day.  Here is a list of the types of writing we will look at in the future and the kinds of projects the students will be doing to go along with each genre of writing:
Persuasive: letter to the editor a newspaper convincing him/her to put an advertisement for their new product in the newspaper
Narrative: students will write their own story about whatever they want, as long as their plot includes a problem and a solution to that problem
Alphabet Text: the students will work together as a class to create an alphabet book about all the things we can find in the 5th grade classroom.  Then we will read our book to the kindergarten and preschool classes.
Autobiography: To follow up our unit about Abraham Lincoln's life, the students will write about their own lives, highlighting the important events that have taken place in their 10 - 11 years
Circular Text: Mimicing the book If You Give a Pig a Pancake, the students will create their own story that ends right where it began
Repeating Text: Using the book Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the students will write their own story that has a small, medium, and big character each with small, medium, and big belongings
See-Saw Text: Following the books The Little Red Hen and my childhood favorite Blueberries for Sal, the students will create a story that goes back and forth as it shows the conversations and interactions of the characters
Expository: To go along with our unit on outer space, the students will write a report about a planet of their choice
Poetry: April is Poetry Month and we will spend the whole month learning about different kinds of poetry and looking at different poets.  To conclude the unit, students will write their very own poem
