 "The United States" Study Unit

On November 9th, I will be assigning students four states which will require research and individual study.  This will be a written report which will have several elements to it.  We will spend some of the time working on it here, however, your child will have to complete some of it at home.  The students will also be creating a souvenier box that will have items that reflect each state in the U.S.   For instance, to reflect one of the natural resources for Vermont, your child will be given a maple leaf for maple syrup, an aluminum arch for Missouri, and a teabag for MA.  (Boston Tea Party)

You will also be involved in this collection.  I will assign several states for you to gather 12 miniature sized items for the student's boxes.  I can help you with ideas if needed.  I want this to be at little cost to you.   The students are truly excited about this.  Additionally, it is going to help them memorize all the states in the union by building associations from their boxes.

UPCOMING TESTS and HOMEWORK_____

Tests and daily homework should always be written in your child's agenda which is to be copied from the boardDo not rely on the website for every test date or for daily assignments.  I do not always have the time to be on the computer during the day due to teaching, interruptions, planning, grading, etc...

Certain tests create anxiety for the students, therefore; when it comes to reading, language, and cummulative math tests (reviewing of lessons) I do not tell the students we will be testing on a specific date.  They actually do much better not knowing about these tests.  I also do a lot of reviewing with the whole class for several days prior to the test as well as immediately before taking the test.

I plan a week in advance on lesson plans and tests.  However, during any school day, the perfect plan may not fall into place no matter how much one prepares.  Therefore, a test may  have to be postponed due to an unplanned event.  This should be of no loss for your child.  Tests are not to be looked upon as cram for it, then forget it, especially when it comes to math and spelling.

We are now approaching math that is requiring immediate recall of the math facts (addition, subtraction and multiplication)  Please continue drilling your child with math facts 0-18 for addition and subtraction.  Your child should be able to answer the problems immediately without counting on fingers or dot counting.

Since we are now working on the multiplication times tables, please help your child study each night with the times table that we are currently studying.  However, once your child has mastered a certain number go ahead and move up with him/her to the next level.  We will continue all the way up to 12's.
