| Gail Elms is a Deputy Headteacher and she has played a key role in promoting the use of Food Studies to motivate students to learn, to engage with school and to adopt a healthy lifestyle, over a period of many years. In recent years Food Studies has also been used to engage the broader community with education and to promote healthy living. Food is taught separately to Design and Technology. At Key Stage 3 all students study both Design and Technology and Food which is delivered through a highly practical approach. At Key Stage 4 all students study Product Design (which does not include Food at Hyde) and about 80 students out of a year group of 180 study Food as an Option, either through NVQ Level 1 Hospitality or GCSE Catering. From September 2008, Food Studies will take on an increased importance for all schools with the introduction of the Licence to Cook programme. All students will be entitled to study food from September 2008 and it will be compulsory from 2010. The programme is wide ranging including Food Hygiene, Making, Healthy Living and web site safety. The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT) are responsible for training and 100 Lead Practitioners are required nationally to deliver the SSAT programme. It is anticipated that we will need more Food Teachers by 2010. Use the arrows to view the Presentation below.
