It's what makes a Subaru a Subaru

Subaru; Japaneese Car, built in America, in which everyone believes was imported from Austrailia!

This page is the culmination of experience I've gained from owning several subarus over the last five years.  My first Subaru was 2003 Legacy Sedan, Special Edition, 5 Speed.   It had all the features of the outback, minus the seats!   I really loved this car, but eventually I succumbed to the glory of a 2006 Legacy GT Limited.  This car truely kicked ass!   I really miss the power, but the monthly payment was killing me, and I was out of work, so I was lucky to sell it for what I owed.    While visiting my friend in Pennsylvania; I borrowed his 1993 Legacy Sport Wagon -- with 390 some odd thousand miles on it!   And BOY did it drive NICE!   Needless to say, the thought was implanted to buy myself an older Subaru!

In August of 2006, I purchased my 1994 Subaru Legacy L Wagon with 103k miles for $2500; which was the blue book value in "Good" condition.  For starters, I have all the records dating back to 14,000 miles (second owner); and it spent it's whole life (until 2005) in California and Oregon; the body was in good shape, and everything was intact inside!

Everyone asks me why I don't buy something newer; but the honest answer is that I really love my older Subaru for a number of reasons; so I'll list them below!

  1. Cheap to insure ($500/yr!)
  2. Good fuel mileage (23.4 MPG all day long!)
  3. Versatility - I can go anywhere, prove me wrong!
  4. Reliable - I'd drive to the moon if I had to!
  5. I don't need to worry about it getting scratched
  6. Parts are readily available
  7. Easy to work on (Serviceability is AWESOME!)

I'm sure I could go on for hours and bore you, but let me say that the following is all that I've NEEDED to do...

  1. Timing Belt & Water Pump - $140 (Subaru parts) + 2hrs labor at 107k miles including drive belts and new tensioner bolts.
  2. Replaced 4 struts (preference for stiffer ride) w/ KYB GR2 and have a complete thrust alignment (4 wheel) done $522 @ 111k miles
  3. After sitting for 9 months; Battery & Alternator for $207.50 @ 125k miles
  4. New Brake Rotors and Pads (all 4) for $325 @ 135k miles

I bought some winter tires (Nokian Happikeletta, straight from Finland!)  from a gentleman who had imported his subaru and wrecked it...   BEST SNOW TIRES EVER!    With this combination the subaru is almost unstoppable in the snow! Best of all, $200 for the set!
