Social Justice Fund and the McCune Foundation have just announced awards to the One Step A La Vez Teen Drop in Center and Board in Fillmore/Piru. Four Fillmore One Step Members received a gift from the Social Justice Fund at their November reception. The Social Justice Fund gives to groups that are making a difference in their community from the ground up. This is the second year that the One Step A La Vez Committee has been recognized as being a group that is working for social justice in Fillmore by the Social Justice Foundation.
The McCune Reception was postponed due to the fires in Montecito. The McCune Foundation also is looking for groups that want to make a difference in their communities. Now that the One Step A La Vez Teen Drop in Center has begun, both foundations will give support so that the youth can look for additional ways to improve Fillmore.

The One Step Center is working with Arts for Action through a grant from the California Consumer Protection Foundation to learn all about the process of video production. The goal of the group is to produce a video which will be used to improve the community of Fillmore/Piru or the situation for youth! A group of 12 high school youth are getting their first video ready to enter it in the Fillmore High School competition. Check the calendar for future workshops. The new Macintosh computer has arrived for video editing and the rest of the equipment will be coming next week! All youth are welcome to participate. |

On Thursday Nov 13 several Fillmore area heath professionals met to give suggestions on how to best introduce high school youth to the huge variety of health professions. It was suggested that there first be an invitation to all youth to attend a lunch meeting to meet the health professional, followed by an indepth meeting at the One Step Center and finally with a tour or shadow of that particular profession. These ideas will be taken to the next One Step Board and Mentor Officers meetings for their input. Special thanks go to Drs. Christine Johnston, Guillermo Sanchez and Ellen Dewey for their ideas!

Health Related Careers: Congratulations to the One Step Center and the BBBSVC for getting an Hispanic Legacy; Destino Foundation grant. As a part of this grant, we will be exposing youth to a variety of health related professions with the hope that some of these professions seem interesting to them. In an era when many health professionals are retiring and the health profession is opening up into wider opportunities, we want to be sure that the youth of Fillmore know about their many choices of careers. If you are a health professional and want to help us expose youth to your career, please call me at 907-6576. If you are a youth and are interested in finding out about the various careers available, talk to Hilary at the One Step Center or drop into Rm 10 at FHS and let them know your area of interest so that we can get someone to talk with you about that career!.
