FAQ

Basic Information

1. There's too many things called Beast of the East... So, what is this one anyways? This Beast of the East 2009... also known as Beast of the East II?
The Beast of the East 2009 is the second edition of a roller derby tournament that features intra-league teams. The teams playing are generally mostly from Eastern Canada, but the tournament is opened to teams from anywhere.

2. I'm hooked! When and where is the Beast of the East 2009?
The Beast of the East 2009 tournament will be held on April 25th and 26th in Montreal, Canada. Those are a Saturday and a Sunday, Sherlock! What better way to spend a weekend? Furthermore, on-site registration as well as the meet & greet for participants will take place Friday night, April 24th. The venue will be the same as last year - Arena Saint-Louis, 5633 rue Saint-Dominique, Montreal, QC, Canada.

3. What is the tournament format? I heard this year will be double the fun! Please explain how you have achieved this mighty feat!
Sixteen teams will be competing in this double-elimination tournament with 20-minute games. Yep, that’s right, we doubled the minimum play time for everyone. One defeat? No problem, you can still win the thing. Two? Well, there's always next year!

4. Who can come?
As with all Montreal Roller Derby events, the event is all-inclusive; everyone can attend! The only restriction is that we generally do not allow young children to sit in the first rows in the Suicide Seats area for safety reasons. Obviously, this is a sporting event and we cannot guarantee that the vocabulary or attitude of all players will always be gracious.

5. Will there be food and drinks? Nom nom nom!
Yes! We will still have a snack bar providing snacks, drinks and beer (18+). If you have more elaborate tastes, or perhaps need a real meal, there are numerous great restaurants (and convenience stores) in the area!

6. Tickets! Tickets! Get your fresh Tickets!
That guy keeps yelling that over in the "Buy Tickets" section.

Team Registration

1. What's the most important thing I should know about registration?
Please respect the deadlines. The earlier you get your shizz in, the more organized we can be before the event. An organized organizing committee will result in an organized tournament. Get it?

2. What kind of teams are invited?
Once again, the Beast of the East is a tournament for home teams, away from home! That means, no travel teams... unless your league only has one team, of course. We had a lot of success with this method last year, because it gave skaters that don’t get a chance for inter-league play to get in on the league vs league action. We also think that this strengthen leagues and prepares home teams for their upcoming season.

3. How do I register my team?
a) Make sure your team is willing to come and that enough of your players will be available for the trip to Montreal.
b) Complete the online form.
c) Wait for our registration confirmation email, it should arrive within the next two to four days.
d) Pay your registration.
e) Wait for our payment confirmation email, it should arrive within two to four days of us receiving your payment.

3. But what are the dates and deadlines, yo? I feel like this is the most important thing to respect, like ever!
January 12th: Eastern Canada early bird team registration opens, the online form will actually BE online.
February 23rd: Early bird team registration ends, registration is expanded to the whole world..
March 19th: Online registrations are closed.
March 26th: Your payment should be postmarked (mail) or timestamped (online) by that date at latest.

4. Payment? I'm poor.
It's only 250 $CAD per team. You could see this as being less than $20 per player, or the revenue from a bad fundraiser event. Please don't send your payment before we have confirmed your online registration with you.
This payment helps us pay for the venue, security and so on; thanks for contributing! We will eventually set up an online payment solution, but in the mean time you can write checks to "MTLRDL", which is our business name, and mail them.

5. Is my registration in yet? I CAN'T TAKE THE WAITING ANYMORE!!
We will keep an up-to-date list of teams and the status of their registration on the main Registration page on this very site.

6. When should we confirm our spot?
As soon as possible! There is a lot of interest from the teams within the region, and only 16 spots available. Filling our online form is a good start, but only when we receive your payment will we officially confirm that your are IN for your shot at being the Beast of the East in 2009.

7. Tell me of all things ROSTER. Please.
Every team has a TEAM ROSTER that can have a roster of up to 20 people on it. That is the roster you should submit in your application. Since we're all benevolent entities and we'd rather you have a good time than play with too few players, we allow borrowing players in the following manner: if your team has less than 12 players on its TEAM ROSTER, you may add up to TWO players from your league on it (without going over 12 players). For example, a team that has 9 players can borrow up to two players from their league, but a team that has 11 players can only borrow one. The reasoning for this is to prevent anyone from “stacking” their teams, and to keep the spirit of this being an intra-league teams tournament. Confused yet? Finally, remember that only 14 players are allowed to be on your GAME ROSTER and only those may be on your bench during a game, plus up to two coaches. Still, WFTDA rules allow swapping people between your GAME ROSTER and TEAM ROSTER between tournament games, so there's still a point in bringing more than 14 players if you wish to do so. Please, do not forget WFTDA Rule 1.3 that says that players swapped out of a GAME ROSTER during a tournament CANNOT come back on it for a later game.

Participant Information

1. Tell us everything you can about your venue!! OMG what kind of wheels??!?
Beast of the East will take place, just like last year, at Arena St-Louis in the heart of Montreal’s Mile-End district. It is a hockey arena, and the floors are smooth concrete. Our skaters wear a variety of wheels, and most do not have a problem with the floor. You should be fine as long as your wheels have a bit of grip, although sometimes skaters with worn out wheels find the floor a bit slippery. Some common wheels used on our floor: Answer Omegas, Zodiacs, Flat Outs, and Fugitives.

2. I need a break; what else can I do around the arena?
There are tons of restaurants, shops, cafes, and bars in the district. If you get a chance, try to check out St-Laurent, St-Viateur, and St-Denis. They are all fun streets!

3. All my family and their families want to come check out the game. Can they get in for free? Who gets in for free?
People working or playing at the tournament are the only ones who get in for free. This means that everyone who is getting for free must either be on a registered team's roster, or fill out the volunteer online form (for referees, officials, statisticians, announcers, volunteers) and be selected.

4. Hotels! I need a hotel!
First, if you are a referee or other volunteer traveling without a team, please contact us directly as we may be able to set you up for free. On the teams front, we've had trouble finding a place that would give us decent group rates for sports teams; apparently a lot of hotels have had bad experiences with that.

Hotels and hostels closer to the venue:

La Maison Internationale de Montréal (514) 849-2732 (more like a youth hostel, 0.9 km)

Miscellaneous

1. Ahhhhh, man! You didn't answer my question with your stupid FAQ!
That's not a question... but don't panic! We get your drift. There's a form to submit new questions.
