World Vision World Vision is Australia's largest overseas aid and humanitarian organisation.
As well as providing relief in emergency situations, they work on long-term development projects with local communities to address the causes of poverty and help them become self-sufficient.
World Vision helps the world's poor in many ways:
* By providing emergency relief to the victims of war and natural disasters.
* Through long term developments where they help people to deal not only with immediate problems, like malnutrition and disease, but with underlying causes such as unemployment, illiteracy, landlessness and dependency.
* By acting as an advocate for victims of injustice and poverty.
* Through supporting and encouraging our own community leaders to have an understanding of and commitment to the poor.
* By encouraging the Australian public to see beyond their own situation and interests, and to care about the needs of others.

See how World Vision is helping to give hope in East Timor, one of our closest neighbours.
Bobonaro
Bobonaro, in the far west part of East Timor, has some of the highest incidences of poverty in the country. There is minimal income and resources, and women give birth to an average of 7 children in their lifetime. The needs of children are great.
Needs in BobonaroThe major problems that the people in the community face are:
* Inadequate sanitation * Unclean water supply * Logistical constraints - the cost of travelling to the nearest Community Health Centre is high and thus becomes limited to a few. World Vision's Goal for BobonaroTo decrease diarrhea morbidity amongst children under 5. Projects for Bobonaro

Mission Mexico Mission Mexico Refuge was started in 2001 by an inspirational Australian couple, Alan & Pam Skuse, who gave up everything to stay and help. It's located in Tapachula in the very south of Mexico.
The refuge cares for children 2 to 17yrs old who have been abandoned, abused, neglected or orphaned. There are an average of 50 children on a permanent basis.
Many of these children have suffered unbelievable acts of violence against them and experienced things that no child should.
This is Sam, just one little boy who's life has been dramatically changed.
The refuge resembles a family home rather than an institution, where the children feel loved and secure. They attend school and classes in swimming, dance and English. They are also learning to surf and are the only surfers in Tapachula!
Look out for a wonderful documentary made about them, "Somewhere near Tapachula".
One of our own Mt Kuring-gai families, Memo & Rebecca Gomez (above), went to Mexico in 2008 for 3 months to help in the refuge. They took their own children, 15, 7, 5 & 2 yrs old, and helped to care for the children in the refuge.
Their time there was an amazing experience for their whole family -
"A big question is, why would you take your children to such circumstances?
Well, I think foremost that God put it on our hearts, ...... and lucky for us we were responsive and really saw the need to take ourselves into situations where we didn't feel comfortable and where our children would experience life that is what it is for most people in the world - unsanitary conditions, water not available by tap, no hot water - for 3 months(!) and sickness. To sit beside children who all have horrific stories just made us get up everyday and want to help them. These children helped us to see life differently.... there were endless hugs and letters of heartfelt appreciation.
Pam and Alan have given up everything to stay there, so we left feeling a great admiration for them - so we continue to help them here in Australia with fundraising events. Pam and Alan are always willing to have help so please look up the website if you would like to go and help, everyone has something to give."
Memo & Rebecca Gomez The refuge is funded by individuals from around the world and aided by volunteers. MKCC is very happy to assist Memo & Rebecca in their fundraising for this important cause.
