These Narratives of the Officers and Crews of the many British Shipping
Companies and of the Allies, has a long chain of record, of effort, in
bringing the necessary raw material, and food across vast stretches of
ocean, to produce and also transport the logistics for war, and to feed
the fighting forces and population. Britain could only produce one
third, the North sea oil fields had not been discovered every drop of
black and white oil was imported, as Merchant Mariners manning the
ships they followed a calling rich in its record of adventure, courage
and devotion to duty.
During the war 1939-45, the service they were called upon to perform was outstanding. The cargoes they carried were the lifeblood of the navies, armies and air forces of the allied nations. Britain in the long years of being attacked, then in the preparation and in the launching of the great offensives, the nature of the task they had to perform, made them the selected targets of enemy attack at all times. The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet not withstanding, go out to meet it. "Put your confidence in us. Give us your faith and your blessing and under Providence all will be well, we shall not fail or falter.... Neither the sudden shock of battle nor the long drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. "Give us the tools and we will finish the job." Mr.Winston Churchill.
