Euphonium BC
Section Leader
Fran Hurlburt started her musical endeavors with piano lessons at age 9 thru 10. She was introduced to the baritone horn and cello in her sophomore year in high school. She was Student Director for the high school band and a member of the Music Honor Society. Fran participated in S.E. Pennsylvania District Band, Bucks County Orchestra and Tri-County Community Band (Trevose, PA.). She had the privilege of following (by a few decades) J.P. Sousa’s gigs with concerts held at Willow Grove Park.
She was one of the first three women admitted into Temple University’s Band. As a junior she transferred to Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing and traded the baritone for an acoustic guitar which was more conducive to dormitory life and hootenannies.
Upon graduating from Cornell she was commissioned into the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps as an officer and a “gentleman” (by act of Congress). Life became busy with work, marriage, children and a series of relocations. The horn collected dust.
Her career lead to a wide range of nursing experiences, notably she:
-
Founded and directed the Visiting Nurse Association of Mattoon Illinois.
-
Initiated the surveillance program in Infection Control at VAMC-Wade Park, Cleveland, Ohio.
-
Created and directed the Staff Development program at a 350 bed United Methodist Home, Ocean City, NJ
After 41 years of musical silence she joined a newly formed band in southern New Jersey and served as a charter member and president. She also played with a community college band who’s summer concert tour included the historic towns of Cape May, Mays Landing and Atlantic City in NJ and the plaza at Lincoln Center in Manhattan, NY.
In November 2005, Fran retired from nursing, moved to Medina to be near family and joined the Medina Community Band. She also plays with the Litchfield Town Band and Wadsworth Community Band.

Matthew Kreglow is a student at Medina Senior High School. He has been a member of the Medina Community Band since May of 2008. He has been playing euphonium for seven years, beginning in the fifth grade at Heritage Elementary School, and has studied with a private instructor for six years. He chose to play euphonium because both his grandfather and his father played the instrument when they were in high school and he wanted to continue the family tradition. In addition to the euphonium, he has been learning to play the guitar.
Matthew currently plays euphonium in the Medina High School Symphony Band. He is involved in other school activities as a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and has also been active in Academic Challenge, Chess Club, Drama Club and Spanish Club. He is an Eagle Scout in Boy Scout Troop 507.
In addition to playing in the MHS Symphony Band and the Medina Community Band, Matthew participates in the Medina United Methodist Church Cantata Orchestra during Christmas and Easter services. During 2007-2008, he was a member of the Baldwin-Wallace College Senior Youth Orchestra. Matthew performed in the pit orchestra for the CAMEO (Cooperative Alliance of Medina Entertainment Organizations) 2008 summer production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and in October 2008, he participated in the Northeast Ohio Reading Band VII.
Beginning in the fall of 2010, Matthew plans to attend Bowling Green State University to major in English (Creative Writing/Editing & Publishing) and minor in Music. He plans to become a writer/editor, and hopes to continue playing euphonium in volunteer bands, and possibly as a freelance musician.
Pat McDermott graduated from Bowling Green State University with a degree in music education.
