Wendy Ezell and Stephanie Carter - "Moodlizing Internet Safety"
  • Faced with budgetary issues such as funding for staff development, providing stipends, and substitutre shortages- Mecklenburg County Schools has created an online learning environment using the free We-based classroom management system, Moodle. This resource helps the school division meet the Virginia Internet Sfaety mandate. The presenters discuss developing an Internet Safety Course that is free, accessable, and flexible for staff development purposes. the professional development and awareness training module also may be used to inform parents and the local community of possible dangers associated with the Internet. 
Chad Wollenberg and Ernie Conner - "Drupal: Levergaing and Open Source Content Management System to Improve Education and Communication:
  • Sony music, BMG, Relay for Life, and Mecklenburg County Schools. What do all of these organizations have in common? They all use Drupal, an open source content management system that provides rich Web 2.0 content to teachers, students, and communities. Mecklenburg County Schools rolled out 15 new state of the art Web Sites that feature RSS feeds, blogging for all teachers and staff, data base driven document libraries, private and public content, rich multimedia capabilites, powerful searchig capabilites, an easy to use interface, and so much more. Find out how they implemented these technologies using open source software, virtualization, and a bit of creativity, all for less than 50 dollars.

May 2008 National Star Student Users Conference, Eatontown, New Jersey
 
Lisa Conner and Ernie Conner - "Implementing SIF into the Star Student Program"
 
  • Mecklenburg County Schools implemented SIF to allow an easy transition of data flowing between the Virginia Department of Education and the school division. This implementation eliminated the need to send extracts to the Virginia Department of Education to request Student Testing Id Numbers. This program allows the EIMS and Star Student to communicate. The school division also implemented a horizontal agent with its food service program that eliminated duplicate data entry into both programs. The presenters will discuss how this program was implemented in their division.  .
