The East 7th Street Youth Program consists of a meal program, tutoring program, and educational enrichment program. The goals of these programs are to motivate children to learn, help them develop self-confidence and self-expression, and encourage them to take on new challenges. Furthermore, the goal is to foster academic and social skills that children need to overcome negative influences of their environment and to grow up to become empowered and self-reliant adults. Since 1998 the Center has partnered with God's Pantry Food Bank, as part of the local Kids' Café program, to provide free meals to youth (ages 3-17) at risk for hunger. Participation in this program is open; youth may drop in for a free meal Monday - Friday, 3:30-5:30 PM. By providing a nutritious meal for children five times a week, Kids’ Café is helping to relieve the pressure on parents and guardians to feed their children with very little means of doing so. In addition to this, by providing a safe and nurturing place for youth to socialize with friends, supervised by caring adult volunteers, Kids’ Café is preventing the young people from engaging in risky behaviors they may otherwise engage in at a less safe, unsupervised location. An onsite tutoring coordinator facilitates parent-teacher communication and administers one-on-one tutoring to students who self-select, or are identified by parents or educators as needing additional structured help with homework or enrichment activities in certain subject areas. Tutees receive an individualized education plan, designed with the help of educators, which is implemented by trained tutors. At the center, parents are encouraged to be actively involved in helping their children succeed in school. This is difficult for many of the parents in the East 7th Street area because they are illiterate themselves. The percentage of individuals over the age of 25 without a high school diploma or GED for Census Tract 3 is a tragic 51%, compared to 14% for Fayette County and 25.9% for Kentucky. Even more tragic, 18.6% of individuals over 25 in Census Tract 3 never made it too high school at all. When discussing this topic with parents, areas of discussion include creating an atmosphere conducive to learning by turning off the television and radio, playing educational games with children, and encouraging parents to take their children to the public library. In order to motivate children to learn and to introduce new interests the Center offers educational enrichment activities for youth participating in the Kids' Café or tutoring programs. These structured activities provide students with hands-on learning experiences that may not be available in public schools due to large class size, lack of funds, or behavioral issues. Activities include art and craft projects, reading activities, theatre workshops, science experiments, math puzzles, foreign language activities, and technological workshops. In addition to on-site educational activities, the Center also exposes youth to opportunities for physical activity, local cultural events, and other parts of Lexington and Kentucky by coordinating field trips in partnership with several area businesses and agencies. The Robert Kolpeck Computer Lab, located at the East 7th Street Center provides participants with access to current technology, high speed internet access, email, Microsoft Office, Windows XP, Mac OS, a variety of training applications, budgeting curriculum, educational games, a laser printer, color scanner, and LCD projector. This well-equipped lab allows disadvantaged participants to develop basic technology skills and information resources.
