Aikido is a vigorous activity but can be practiced by the young, old, male or female.  Though the reasons for training may vary depending on the individual, regular practitioners can obtain physical fitness, knowledge of self-defence, relaxation and even sporting achievement through regular training.

You do not have t be physically fit to train.  You will be introduced to all aspects gradually and encouraged to g at your own pace.  You will find yourself getting fitter as you progress.  Women who practice are encouraged to wear a sports bra under their gi (training top).

As with any exercise, if you have an ailment that can affect your training, please speak to the instructor prior to training.  Please note that Shodokan welcomes any and all to do Aikido.  Aikido is a contact sport and as such physical contact has to be taken into consideration.

Hygiene

Personal hygiene is extremely important while doing Aikido.  Fingernails and toenails must be kept short, long hair must be secured and ornamental jewellery is not permitted while training.  If they cannot be removed they must be taped up for the safety of all participants.  Shoes are not required, as such you are asked to wash and wipe your feet before stepping onto the mat.  For serious infections you will have to stop training until it clears up.
