
Aikido, the ‘Way of Harmony with the Spirit’, is a mental and physical discipline with its roots in the martial tradition of feudal Japan. It was derived from the fighting arts of the Samurai, both armed and unarmed Aikido was handed down through the ryu or schools of
Jujitsu, until it was refined and given new ethical direction by Morihei Ueshiba in the 1930’s.
At its heart are a code of non-violence and the avoidance of conflict. This code is central to its methods where body movements and circular avoidance techniques seek to redirect and control aggression.
Shodokan
The Shodokan System of learning Aikido has its roots in the Japan University system. Professor Kenji Tomiki, Morihei Ueshiba’s uke (training assistant) and first 8th Degree Black Belt, owing to his position of Professor of Budo at Waseda University (Tokyo) designed a system of teaching Aikido that makes it possible for anyone to discover the wonders of this graceful art safely and in an organized manner.
Etiquette
The Shodokan System does not allow aggressive or abusive behavior in the Dojo (training hal). If behavior is not in line with the ethics of Aikido, violators wil be asked to cease their membership.
