Sand Sports at Malmo

By spring 2008, the tennis courts on our Community League lease had fallen into such a state of disrepair that action was required.  Plans drafted in 2005 were put out to estimate, resulting in a requirement for $400,000 above and beyond what the league had available for this project. Replacing one or more of these tennis courts was not as sustainable, effective in space utilization or versatile as switching to sand sports.   A local adult recreational league had indicated a desire to rent any available slots
in the evenings and weekends.  The Board voted on April 15, 2008 to proceed with a three court sand beach design; a design that will stay well within the $100,000 budget for this initiative.  Between these courts is an area for sand sports such as beach soccer (see below).  Protective pads will encase posts.  The hardware on the nets will allow their height to be easily adjusted for different age groups and uses.   Supplemental equipment, soft oversize balls, nets, etc., will be acquired to
ensure that the Malmo Elementary School physical education program will make good and varied use of the facility.  Paralympic and senior use will be promoted and facilitated.   The posts will be removable to facilitate a dramatically larger winter family skating area.

The new amenity will complement summertime social functions at the hall and draw young adults to Malmo for recreational league play.

This May & June will be busy months as we get our gloves dirty bigtime.   The old tennis courts have to come out and get replaced by the new multi-use sand sports and turf facility.   Join us for some evening and weekend frolic in the dirt!   Contact Eric Fadden436-2950 ericfadden at shaw.ca) to sign-up and leave your mark.   Contributors' families will receive free Malmo memberships for 2008/2009, plenty of food and beverages, and great camaraderie as we work and play in the mud.
