Jocelyn Believes in Malmo

Good day neighbours! My name is Jocelyn Cuthbertson and I have lived in Malmo with my husband Tom, and daughter Erin for almost 14 years now. When my daughter entered Malmo Elementary School almost 10 years ago, I found that it was necessary to take a more active role in the community. I needed to keep informed about what was happening in her school as well as the neighbourhood at large. I was asked to volunteer as our community league executive secretary, which I did for 3 years. After that I was nominated for President, which I did for 3 more years. Now I am part of a team of volunteers who plan our annual social events. I have been doing that for 3 years and will carry on in that capacity for a little longer. During my years of volunteering, I have come in contact with a wide variety of people from all professions and made a lot of friends. I feel that the friendships I have made have given me and my family a real sense of security, safety and ownership. My daughter also feels safe and secure within the borders of Malmo and has seen that there is so much more world out there than her house or her block. She realizes the importance of being part of something bigger, that there is a need to get involved, know the issues and make a difference. She is always interested in what happened at the monthly meetings and now she herself is volunteering where she can. Taking care of the community is much the same as taking care of your own household, only on a much larger scale and with a lot more help. This help comes in the form of our other executive members and volunteers, and is a vital component in keeping our community thriving, and making sure we have a voice in decisions happening in and around the neighbourhood e.g. Southgate expansion and the LRT development. I also work full time for a private, international organization that encourages community involvement and looks highly on individuals who step up and try to make a difference. I have enjoyed every minute of my time volunteering over the years and encourage all residents of Malmo to come out to our "April Social" on Friday, April 11. Come and meet me and your neighbours and decide how you can be part of this wonderful community. Big or small. And, it looks good on your resume.
