Malmo Pond Storm Relief Project
Tuesday, May 12 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Malmo Community League Hall 11525 48th Avenue
The City’s Drainage Services Program has identified a need
for the construction of a storm relief pond on University of
Alberta property at the corner of 51st Avenue and 115
Street. During past Community consultation meetings,
conceptual designs for the pond were presented and feedback has been received from area residents. The project is now in the detailed design stage.
The project consists of the design and construction of a large
temporary holding pond to relieve demand on existing
infrastructure and prevent flooding during rain storm events.
The Open House will include displays showing the location
and details of the proposed project. Representatives from
AECOM Engineering, project consultant, and from the City’s
Drainage Services will be on hand to address any questions
you may have about this project. There will not be a formal
presentation.
Please contact Bradley Leeman at the City of Edmonton
Drainage Services at 780-496-3872 if you need more
information.
Services for deaf or hard of hearing persons provided upon
request. Call Citizens Action Centre at TTY/NexTalk 944-5555.

YOUR INPUT NEEDED- The Reading Lady Project in Malmo
As U of A graduate with a major in Comparative Literature, I have known first hand the everyday skills that can be gained from having a love of literature. Comprehensive vocabulary, articulate speech, and sharpened communication skills are all wonderful side effects of being a book aficionado. My goal is to sharpen these skills in today’s youth by launching a brainchild I’ve nicknamed The Reading Lady. Essentially, I would like this to evolve into a weekly book club for kids. There is no age category, admission cost, height restrictions, etc…the only criteria for kids who want to join is they must love to use their imaginations! Before that happens, come check out the first draft of the project: Families, unplug yourselves, and come listen to tales and stories as read by The Reading Lady. Get comfortable, bring a
folding chair, an old blanket, a couple of pillows, a quiet snack, and your imagination! Excerpts from Darcy & Duanne Jahn's How I Survived My Summer Vacation will be read. This hilarious novella chronicles a young lady’s misadventures with her dysfunctional but loving family as she endures her summer vacation.
The Reading Lady kick off event will hopefully occur in June.
Time and Place currently TBA, but stay tuned...
I would like to get some feedback from the community before launching the project. Interested in being a weekly story reader? Have a great idea to contribute? Want to be involved? Have a question, comment, concern or query?
Please let me know!
Email: thereadinglady@hotmail.com
Looking forward to all your feedback! And please excuse me, but I simply must put my nose back in a book.
Yours,
The Reading Lady and Fellow Malmo Resident,
Keltie

DEB SHORT, HALL RENTAL COORDINATOR is HANGING UP THE KEYS
After serving our community with great dedication for too many years to count, "Deb" as we know her, is stepping down from the volunteer board position of Hall Rental Coordinator at the end of June. Deb has treated this role with the utmost respect and professionalism, being a great public relations person for our community to the many organizations and families that utilized our facilities. While we are very sad to loose Deb in the role, we are happy that she will be able to spend more time with her grandchildren. We are now waiting for two or three individuals in the community to take the reins from Deb in a team-based approach, and keep the facilities available.
Below is Deb's story.
-Alex Khan (President alex.t.khan@gmail.com)
In 1996 the Malmo newsletter had placed an ad looking for a
hall janitor and I applied for the position. I was given that
job and then in the fall, I took over the position of hall rentals and was then a part of the Malmo executive.
Over the years, I have helped out in the kitchen with the winter carnival and spaghetti supper. I have also taken notes when the secretary was unable to come to an executive meeting. A few years ago, the executive gave me permission to fix up the kitchen with new appliances, china, glassware and other necessities. I hired some young girls from the
community and we went to work cleaning out the cupboards and restocking the cupboards with all the new purchases. A good time was had by all of us!!
In 2005, after taking a few years off from doing hall rentals I phoned the past President Jocelyn and asked if I could come back. Because of the years that I have spent doing the hall rentals, I have met a lot of people from the community and now have some very dear friends. I grew up in a small community in Saskatchewan and was on the executive for many organizations until I moved to Edmonton.
Unfortunately, Edmonton never really seemed like home until we moved to Malmo and then over the years as we became a part of the community, it soon felt like HOME!!!
As of the end of June, I am resigning from the executive and as the hall rental coordinator. At this time I would to thank everyone in the past 13 years that I have worked with on the Malmo executive and the people who made my hall rental position an enjoyable time. It was an experience that I will never forget.
Best wishes from Debbie Short
PRESIDENT ROLE OPENS UP-Alex Stepping Down
The last three years have been challenging and fun,
but it is time for me to make way for fresh ideas and
new approaches. I have made my share of blunders
but also enjoyed some successes along the way. I
have no regrets and a greater appreciation for
the people of this community and
the human spirit within us.
Together we were able to:
• Learn how to communicate with City Council &
Administration “training” on the Golflands
development issue; though we lost the battle – the
land is still a grassy field.
• Learn how to make lemonade –when faced with
the Southgate expansion that could have been a
win-lose proposition, we turned it into a win-win
proposition.
• Overcame the City proposition that a large
chunk of our community (residences) should be
turned into a parking lot for LRT park and ride.
• Gain a privacy fence demanded by residents on
our 111 St border.
• Gain concessions from City Transportation to
improve the quality of the LRT footprint in our
community; noise and esthetics mostly.
• Rejuvenate our grounds with beachvolleyball courts
when other alternatives were not financially possible..
• Build a website with innovations such as an online
calendar (website is now being redone by a
new team)
I plan to stay active in the role of Past-President,
on civic issues involving City Council, and to
assist my successor in a smooth transition.
If you are interested in a coffee to discuss a
rewarding personal-growth opportunity that will
root you in the community, please contact me, Alex
Khan, alex.t.khan@gmail.com, 422 0200, 437 2694
evenings.
