The GILMOUR Family: Nathaniel GILMOUR (?1742 -1809)

Nathaniel GILMOUR's will written in 1808 was proved 2nd June 1809. He appointed on 29th May 1809 his adopted son Captain David Gilmour and his son-in-law 1st Lieut.John GORE Royal Navy to be his executors. He, therefore, appears to ahve died between these dates. The will was not lodged so was attested to at probate. It is not known whethere Nathaniel Gilmour married. If John Robson's research (Captain Cook researcher) http://pages.quicksilver.net.nz/jcr/~cooky.html is accurate, then Nathaniel was born in in 1742 in Inverness to James Gilmour and Margaret Clark.

How Nathaniel came to adopt David Gilmour is not known. There is no mention of a wife nor of his marital status in his will yet there is a mention of a son-in-law so we can assume a daughter. A Sarah GILMOUR married John GORE in 1806 in St Thomas' Church, Portsmouth so this Sarah may have been Nathaniel's natural or adopted daughter.

Nathaniel placed numerous advertisements both  locally and nationally. From these we learn that his business was engaged in selling captured ships, 'prizes' which had een captured by British ships, the porceeds of which would be divided among those who had captured the ship, after due deductions for commision to the seller!

Other than these faint traces, Nathaniel remains a shadowy figure.
