The Southwark JONES family: Nathaniel Richard Jones (1765 -1797)

This JONES family lived in or close to Tooley Street, Southwark ( I also have a Welsh JONES family).

Hannah Payne JONES who married Robert Henry RUBIDGE in 1811 at St Mary Bermondsey, Southwark was the eldest child of Nathaniel Richard JONES and Hannah PAYNE. She was baptised at St Olave's on 8th December 1790 at St Olave's, Tooley Street, Southwark. Her father, is described as a feltmaker and gained his freedom through patrimony ( as did his brother Joseph, a cooper in 1792)  although at the time of his death in 1797 he described himself as a stationer. Feltmaking is usually associated with making hats and it is interesting to note that his father Richard was a hatter as noted on his children's baptismal records. His father Richard married Sarah Cornwell  in 1763 in St Saviour's Southwark on 1st November 1763. Nathaniel was batpised in St Olave's Tooley Street Southwark on 3rd March 1765.

St Olave's was an ancient parish.  The last church of this name was erected in 1743 and was situated at the South end of London Bridge; it was closed in 1918 and demolished in 1920-28.  There is a memorial plaque on a Grade II listed office building "St Olaf House" opposite the entrance to London Bridge Station but no other trace survives.http://www.stmarysbermondsey.org.uk/index.htm

All of Nathaniel Richard and Hannah's children were baptised in St Olave's church indicating stability of their residence. Nathaniel Richard himself and his siblings were also baptised in this church between 1790 and 1797. Alfred Portlock RUBIDGE, a son of Robert Henry stated that his grandfather JONES had lived at St Olave's for 200 years - he died in 1902 in Graaff Reinet, Eastern Cape.
Nathaniel Richard died in 1797 aged 32. Hannah was 27 with at least three children to support: Hannah Payne JONES b 1790, Richard Payne Jones b 1792, and Eleanor Payne Jones b 1795. Mary Ann Payne Jones was born and died in 1797 and neither she nor her sister Sarah Ann b 1793 d 1796 are mentioned in Nathaniel's will.

Nathaniel Richard's will named his brother Joseph,a cooper, as executor. His life insurance policy of £3,000 was to be redeemed to purchase freehold property for his wife Hannah. His three surviving children are usefully (for the researcher) named.

Hannah, Nathaniel Richard's wife, lived until 1845 when she died aged 75 at 11 Devonshire Buildings, Great Dover Road, Newington. She appears aged 70 on the 1841 census in Deverill Street, St Mary Newington, Lambeth in the same household as Sarah STARKE aged 60, her sister. Hannah is mentioned in her son's (Richard Payne JONES) 1823 and 1835 Cape wills.
