Solidarity in Training

Working Together, Taking Action

What is going on?

SIT (School for International Training) has been re-named and re-branded. The new name is SIT Graduate Institute. In addition, the MAT/PIM graduate programs are being restructured. The MAT program is being heavily cut. The faculty will be diminished from 9.5 full time faculty positions to 4 (with the summer program positions being reduced to 1). Student numbers will be capped at 30. Faculty, students and alumni have serious, justified concerns about the quality of the future programs being offered, and the financial standards for making these decisions. For the PIM (Program in Intercultural Service, Leadership and Management) program, the plan is to make some of the teaching available overseas in developing countries. Students have been denied more information as to the specifics of these new program models.

Why are we concerned?

We are concerned that the administration has not utilized a participatory decision-making process involving faculty. This contradicts both the curriculum taught at SIT, and decision-making processes historically promoted by SIT and World Learning. Resistance by alumni, students, and faculty has been documented in letters, video, and petitions. Our questions and requests for information have for the most part gone unanswered.

We are working towards the continual representation of the values and spirit of World Learning through encouraging the administration’s actions and operations to be reflective of our collective values.

  1. Community Solidarity - a feeling of unity based on respect for diversity and a sharing of common goals, interests, and sympathies.
  2. Good Governance - a collaborative, participatory, transparent & accountable governance
  3. Educational Quality - An engaging, experiential & student-centered educational environment inclusive of our collective experiences and relevant global perspectives.

What can we do together?

This website is an effort to include the broader community of people interested in the reputation and future of SIT/World Learning, who are voicing resistance to proposed changes and the process being used. We must further the movement to Take Back SIT. Please take the time to educate yourself about the recent changes in the graduate programs at SIT. Read through the documents attached to this page. The documents attached highlight the concerns expressed by the SIT community.
