March Madness! Sweet Sixteen!
Mackintosh Academy has it all!! Students have had their own March Madness
Basketball tournament. The larger classes made use of the outdoor courts
as well as the indoor court. It was nice to have two games going on
simultaneously. This gave more students the opportunity to show their
teamwork and skills. After March Madness the students spent several day
designing, creating, and performing different pyramids. This unit seems to
be a favorite at Mackintosh. Each class created an all-class
pyramid. This was especially challenging when we had 21 students in a
pyramid!!
Balance and cooperation were the IB attitude and
profile that guided our unit of balance stations. During this unit
students worked on a balance beam,
sit 'n spin, balance
board, bocce, woggler, exercise ball, and stilts. It is always fun to
watch the students work with the stilts.
Our physical education journey will continue
with our focus on baseball. During this Unit of Inquiry, Middle Years 1
will be attending a Rockies game. This ties in with their study of the
Civil War. At the game, the students will keep score and
statistics. In addition the Middle Years students will be presenting a
baseball batting project using photography as the medium. All students
will end this unit with a World Series Game. As you can see we have a very
busy spring planned.
EC- Working on unit "How we organize ourselves" and learning about how baseball is organized.
P1: Working on unit "How we Share the Planet"with its emphasis on rainforests. In PE, we are looking at the baseball and its connections to the rain forest.
P2: Is working on their unit on "Who we are" and leaders. We are looking at baseball leaders throughout history and what IB profiles they embody. Students are interviewing parents and grandparents about what sports leaders were influential in their childhoods to share with the class.
E1: Is working on their unit on "How we organize ourselves" and Africa. We are playing many traditional African games in PE to enhance their studies, as well as looking at the organization of the baseball community (of course at a more sophisticated level than EC!)
E2: Is in Washington DC this week! We will be engaging in the Presidential Physical Fitness testing when they get back to enhance their study of "how governments connect communities."
