MY2 Newsletter: November 9, 2009

The MY2 students are in the final stretch of the first trimester.  For the time remaining before our Thanksgiving break, we will be focusing on our summative projects as well as completing our individual portfolios.  Each student received the rubric outlining the portfolio guidelines.  Students will work on these at school, but the majority of the portfolio will be completed at home.  The due date for the completion of the portfolio will be Tuesday, November 24th.

We will be putting our vocabulary lists aside until after Thanksgiving in preparation for our summative and portfolio work.  However, we will continue to read and discuss East as well continue with our grammar practice.

In Humanities, students are completing The People of the Past unit by writing a detailed report on an ancient city of choice.  The report will consist of the history of the city, people and important events.  In addition to the report, each student will construct an interactive model of their city.  Both of these projects will help the students construct their knowledge of the people of the past and address the unit question and area of interaction.

In Science, students are preparing for the unit test on Wednesday, and they are designing an experiment for Plasmolysis that is due Friday.

Please look for a permission slip on Tuesday.  We will be attending the E1B play at the YGP.

Thanks so much,

Amber & Greg

MY2 Newsletter: November 16-20th

It is hard to believe that the end of the first trimester as well as Thanksgiving are upon us.  This year is flying by, and the My2 students are taking it in stride.  Each class is concluding units of study, and the middle schoolers are working on balancing studies, projects and extra curricular fun.

We will be finishing our study of East on Friday.  We have focused on relevant literary elements, such as foreshadowing, plot, characterization, and archetypes as well as patterns within literature.  We will conclude this unit with a summative unit test on Friday.  It will consist of essay questions about East and The Kin as well as the grammar that we have focused on this trimester.

In Science the M2ers have moved on from their Botany unit and right into Agriculture where they will be investigating how agriculture has changed society.  ** A special thanks to Mr. Hofer for a fabulous presentation on sugar beets.

In Humanities, we have finished our unit: People of the Past, with a written assignment and a model of an ancient city, and we are now beginning our next unit: Every Village has A Lord, a study of the Middle Ages.

Just a reminder about our first annual
“Grandparents & Special Persons Day”
On Monday, November 23rd, grandparents and those special individuals are invited to be a part of  our Mackintosh community.  We will begin our day with tea & coffee and a light breakfast. Following our snacks, we will head to the classrooms for a morning of entertaining interactive activities.
