Encouraging lifetime learning and leadership   among children and adults in the Shiloh community.

Lead and Learn was developed to address the social, emotional, and academic needs of young children and preteens attending after school and summer camp programming at the Shiloh Recreational Complex.Lead and Learn meets twice a week both in after school and at summer camp to engage children and adults in language and literacy learning opportunities as well as cultural arts activities.Lead and Learn programming includes:

  • Nationally recognized curricula (Second Step and Being Yourself) that address both social emotional development and problem solving/nonviolent conflict resolution skills
  • A service learning component involving children in community-related outreach
  • Discussion of ethical principles and leadership development
  • Planning and preparation for community events
  • Mentoring by adults and peers
  • Individualized opportunities for emotional support

Lead and Learn volunteers and Shiloh after school/summer camp staff communicate regularly to address behavioral concerns, support family access to local resources, develop programming ideas, and problem solve regarding social issues within the Shiloh community. We want to empower children with the skills and resources they need to make safe and healthy choices for themselves as they enter their teen years.
