FamilyShare wish list

FamilyShare has been developed to address the needs of women and young children living in rural communities.  FamilyShare targets families marginalized by economic, cultural, health, and social factors.  FamilyShare addresses the roots of poverty by:

  •  meeting the basic human needs of people

  • offering opportunities for education
  • providing resources that support access to services
  • developing social and spiritual community connections

Currently, LightShare is partnering with Davis Chapel United Methodist Church to address many critical issues in the underserved area of Hominy Valley.  Lack of public transportation, lack of adequate health insurance, and other economic factors often limit families' and senior adults' access to medical and mental health services, social service programming, and early child development experiences.  LightShare, Davis Chapel UMC, and Piney Mountain UMC are partnering to work with and in the Hominy Valley community so that the residents will have greater access to community services and education.  We anticipate that by bringing together young and old through family, church, and educational programming, then each generation  will have positive outcomes in physical and mental health, educational achievement, and spiritual/social development.

Hominy Valley Fact Sheet

FamilyShare sessions occur twice per year, in the fall/winter and in the spring/summer.  Sessions include two components:  3 months of parenting classes and early learning playgroups to learn parenting strategies and skills then 3 months of mentoring to reinforce positive parenting and encourage family strengthening.

Weekly FamilyShare gatherings include:

  • Social play and skill development for children

  • Social networking and learning opportunities for adult participants using The Incredible Years program; creating the individual community assessment notebook (I-CAN) that enhances awareness of community services to meet the needs of the family

  • Inclusion of service learning students from local universities/colleges

  • Mentoring by senior adult women

  • Family resource library with materials, books, and toys to bridge learning between home and FamilyShare

  • Group lunch to support family connections

  • Access, both onsite and in town, of social/health services--transportation provided by Piney Mountain UMC church van

  • Food/Diaper Pantry and Clothing Closet open to the community
