How do I tell what kind of PayPal account I have?

PayPal has a couple different account types. The easiest way to check what kind of account you have is:
  1. Log in to PayPal (http://paypal.com)
  2. After logging in, you should be on the page called My Account Overview. If you don't see this, click the Overview link at the top left under the My Account tab.
  3. Under the page header, you'll see some info about your account. Your account type should be listed here as Account type: <type>.

How do I sign up for PayPal Payments Pro?

To get started, sign up on the PayPal site. You'll need to sign up for, or upgrade to, a PayPal Business account.

You may also want to read PayPal's info on Payments Pro.

How do I upgrade to a PayPal Business account?

  1. Click the Profile or Edit Profile link, either on the PayPal sub-menu or on the Account Overview page, respectively.
  2. Click the Personal/Business Information link from under Account Information
  3. Click the Upgrade button at the bottom of the page and follow the instructions

What's the difference between PayPal Payments Pro vs PayPal Payments Standard?

Both of these options allow you to process payments with PayPal or credit cards, but the major differences are:

   Payments Pro
Payments Standard
Customers check out ...
 ... on your site
 ... on PayPal.com
Cost/month
 $30/month Free
Processing charges
1.9% - 2.9% + $0.30 USD 2.2% - 2.9% + $0.30 USD

  • Payments Pro: Good for sites who are concerned with keeping customers on their e-commerce site for their entire checkout experience. This gives you freedom to control how users check out, and can result in higher sales conversion rates.
  • Payments Standard: Lower-cost option that sends users to PayPal for entering their payment info. This is generally viewed as a less-optimal checkout experience, though this may or may not be the case.
For more details, check out the plans and comparison chart at PayPal. To get started with PayPal Payments Pro, sign up on the PayPal site.

How do I set up a delegate user for my PayPal account (multi-user access)?

A feature called multi-user access allows you to create other users with limited access on your PayPal account. This is a much more secure alternative to giving out your personal username and password to others when they need to access your PayPal account.

If Layout Solutions needs access to your PayPal account for setup, you'll need to do the following:

    Setup steps

    1. Log in to your PayPal account
    2. Verify that you are signed up for PayPal Business or PayPal Premier account. (Sign up or upgrade on PayPal )
    3. Go to the Profile subtab and click on the Multi-User Access link
    4. Create a new user, and write down the settings:
      1. User's name: Layout Solutions
      2. User ID: '<yourcompany>lsi' (For example, surfboardcolsi)
      3. Password: <anything - we will change this later>
    5. Check the following boxes:
      1. View Balance
      2. View Profile
      3. Edit Profile
      4. API Activation & Authorization
      5. Discuss Account with Customer Service
    6. Hit the Save button
    7. Call us at 805-969-8784 with the newly-created login info, OR post the info as a new message in your Layout Solutions Basecamp account.
Do not email us this information. Email is not a secure way to send sensitive info.
    8. All done. We'll now be able to access what we need from your PayPal account.
