Welcome to 5/6 Language Arts and Social Studies!

Hello families, caregivers, and amazing students! Welcome to LASS Class!

This year, we are exploring the theme of "heroes & she-roes." We are also learning about the history of some important African civilizations, as well as the early history of colonial North America and the United States. Through reading, writing, and talking together, we will explore questions like:

  • What are the qualities of a hero?

  • What do a culture's heroes reveal about that culture?

  • How did physical geography influence the location and success of early civilizations?

  • How did some civilizations become especially powerful? How do they lose their power?

  • What happened in the past, and how do we know?

  • How are narratives of history influenced by bias and perspective?

We are so glad you are here to join us in this important and challenging work!

What Homework will be assigned this quarter?

  • Students should read at least 20 minutes each day, outside of school. Research shows that this amount of time is necessary to develop strong readers and academic skills that are useful later in middle school and high school. If your scholar is struggling with reading this amount, please start small and work towards it. Also feel free to reach out to us for suggestions and support.

  • Additionally, scholars may need to work on some of their in class work outside of the classroom time. This extra work will be kept to a minimum.
