It is official now: Asus is bundled with Windows XP in Japan and also coming soon in the US. It is a small very useful device that many want to put in a sub-laptop category although in fact it is a fully functional laptop if not for the small screen size.
I have been in the focus of attention during the last month when sitting outside and typing on my white web model of Asus PC EEE 701 with web cam and 4 GB flash drive. Everybody just wants to see it, touch it, weight it and inquire about it up to the point to that it has become excessive bother for me because I cannot sit peaceful in a cafe or in a park doing my own things on it. I don't know how many have gone and bought it afterwards but they all were lusting after it. Asus EEE vendors should send me a percentage of their sales commisions :) It is a very apparent that this thing will sell like a hotcake if it is not already. No wonder that other laptop manufactures are starting to take notice. At the end the competition that will arise will be beneficial for all consumers. But what makes this small thing with low specs so appealing? First is the weight. If it is less than 1 kg I am able to carry it with me at all times without thinking when I will need it. I use it for checking my e-mail, browsing occasional web pages, reading e-books, dictionaries, learning, etc. Despite the small 7 inch screen I can use it as a movie player on plane or bus without needing another device. I used to carry a Palm One for such things but it had really small screen and technical limitations of Palm OS were too obstructive. The versatility of PC OS gives much more options of using the ubiquitous software for everything. The small screen and keyboard does not allow using the EEE for games, graphical work and also serious copy-writing work. Still when working at home on a "real" computer I use the EEE as a second screen for lists or dictionary. This setup is more convenient that dual monitor system because you can control two screens independently. And it is also easier to travel with one 15 inch laptop plus Asus PC EEE. What I would like Asus to improve in the next models is to make the battery last longer. 3 hours is not enough for outdoor excursions or travel. Or maybe I could carry a second battery?
