アメリカ・メキシコに計15年間滞在し、民主化、開発、社会運動、ソーシャルワーク、社会学方法論などを学びました。新聞記事などから政治的活動の情報を抽出して、それをデータベースに集積して分析する手法を用いて、メキシコの民衆抗議行動のパターンがどのように変化しているのかを研究しています。PH.D取得後、ハーバード大学のポスドク研究員として、ロイター通信などのメディアから自動的にデータベースを構築するプロジェクトに従事していました。この経験を生かして、次の研究プロジェクトでは、ラテンアメリカ各国のメディアが配信するニュースからイベント・データベースをつくり、各国の政治・社会活動の比較を行いたいと考えています。このため、社会学、政治学、言語情報科学、地域研究、統計学、コンピュータ工学など分野の専門家や学生からなる学際的な研究チームを作りたいと思っています。
