2008 #3

Hi All,

Hopefully everyone is back in the swing of things now.

Kumeu Show Parking
-------------------------------
A huge thanks to everyone who helped out with parking.  I think we just squeaked through with numbers, and thanks to some great organization (Bruce, Sandra, Mike) we ended up looking pretty good.

Interclub
------------
Autumn pennant has started, we have a total of four teams entered M03, M07, M12 and W03.  I was particularly impressed at my personal achievement on Tuesday of 'snatching defeat from the jaws of victory' - leading 8-1 in the fourth game, having a number of match points, and then losing 10-8.

We had a few issues last year with 'etiquette', so here is a recap of what *my* understanding of Kumeu Interclub involves:
Overall:
* We have a reputation within Auckland for being a great bunch of people.  Lets keep that up.  This means on-court and off-court.
Away Games:
* Pretty simple - show up on time, have a great game, hang around for dinner and a drink if possible.
Home Games - this is where we have had problems
* Show up *before* 7pm.  Other teams have to travel, so sometimes they arrive early.  If you know you cant be there for 7pm, make sure your captain knows.
* Make sure you can stay for the meal and a drink.  We are the hosts, so we have to hang around.  If you wont be able to stay after your game, let your captain know before the night so that they can get someone else to play instead.
* Bring a meal.  Pretty obvious.  Bonus points if your team can coordinate a gastronomic symphony.

Tournament
-----------------
Dont forget that the tournament for James Aperahama is coming up in two weeks time.  There are a few things to do:
1) Get your entry in to me.  This is going to be a great tournament, so don't miss out.  If you cant play, please try and attend Saturday night anyway (but let me know so we can ensure we have enough food)
2) If you are playing, then you *will* be asked to help out.  This includes
  * Controller duty.  I will be there every night to make sure it goes smoothly, but as usual I will try to have people running control
  * Bar duty.  Pretty obvious.
  * Kitchen duty.  Don will need some help with toasted sandwiches.  If Stu Atkinson can do it (and do a fantastic job, I might add), then *anyone* can!!!
  * Saturday night salad/dessert.  Expect a call during that week with your assigned dish
  * Saturday night hosting.  Everyone needs to help out to ensure that our guests are having a good time, and that plates get cleared, food gets served, etc etc.
  * Saturday night drinking.  Kumeu has a reputation to uphold, and I am relying on you all...

(A little footnote - our second tournament last year was a real disaster and made a lot of clubs/people unhappy with us.  They are giving us another chance, so we really do need to make this a good one)

Open Day
--------------
New Zealand Squash has organized a country-wide squash open weekend on the 5th and 6th of April from 2:30-5:00pm.  We didn't have a choice about the date, so it conflicts with our tournament on the 5th.  This shouldn't be a problem - we can show people what a tournament looks like and ask them to come back on the Sunday for an actual game.  There will be a lot of promotion for this (we have arranged a direct mail drop in our area) so I am hoping to get a few new members out of this.  If anyone would like to help out, we need people who can give some basic coaching to new players or explain how the club operates, etc etc.  Bring an old(er) racquet for the newbies to try if possible.  The more people we have down at the club on Sunday, the better our club will look, and the more chance we have of getting new members signed up.  Yes, the bar will be open.  Email me if interested, and tell any prospective members to come down on the 6th from 2:30-5pm.

New Members
---------------------
The New Member bounty is in operation, and so far only Dave Beattie and Tanya Bish have received $50 bounties.  Get those new members signed up *now*, or we wont be able to get them playing in winter interclub.  (We have actually had some more new members that have just 'walked in the door', so it is looking promising for this year).

Key Expiry
----------------
Keys will start expiring about now, so make sure you contact me or Alan to pay your subs and ensure your key works.  Call me on 021 416 491 if you have a problem, but the easiest thing is to come down to club night (Thursday 6pm-8pm) and we will get it sorted.

Thats all from me,

Glen.
