| When: February, 2002 Companions: Derek, Rob, Elaine, Clea, and Sean Trip NotesThis trip was the brain child of a weekend climbing trip to Pinnacles. After a day of climbing we were all chatting and waxing poetic (over walkie-talkies) about where we'd like to climb. The consensus was Railay Beach in Thailand. It seemed odd that we all wanted to go and yet none of us went, so I arranged the trip.Plane tickets were cheap which meant we had a few connections. Not atypically the airline lost our luggage, so we had to hang in Bangkok for a day. My most vivid memory is walking down the street and having the smells alternate between tasty and repugnant with every few steps. Once our luggage arrived we continued our Journey to Railay. Railay beach is on the Ao-Nang peninsula and is only accessible by long-tail boat. So, you fly into Krabi, take a car to the beach, run across the beach, and hop on a boat. It was damn entertaining :) Once there we were staying in absolute luxury, 2 people to a bungalo, air conditioning (handy with temperatures in excess of 100F), a refridgerator to cool down our water, and hot showers! Our days were spent waking with the dawn, heading out to a climbing locale we spent the better portion of the previous night choosing and then climbing until we were beat. Head back to have some Thai food for Lunch, take a quick nap, then head back to the walls. A bit after dark, we would finish our climbs, head back for Dinner and just chill on the beach. The climbing was all sport, all limestone, and all intense. I did my first sport lead on those walls. The food was cheap, the ice cream was not, the red wine was chilled, the curry made you cry, the climbing was stiff, the belays were on the beach, and the living was fine. I could've stayed for a long, long time. | Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/gdalesandre/2002Thailand |
