| When: July, 2006 Companions: Karen Trip NotesThis trip came about when I ran into my friend Kristen's sister Karen at a party and she said "Hey Greg, you're up for anything, right? I want to go to Ecuador, you in?" And, well, I was. Karen was there for a month but I was only coming out for a week. We decided that the Galapagos on a small boat was the way to go. Karen worked out all the details. If you get a chance you should travel with Karen, she was fun and didn't hesitate to wear tube top most appropriate in a bar into a national park, how cool is that? The BoatWe traveled on a 16 person boat form island to island. There are a few ways to travel around the Galapagos, big ships, tiny boats, or our boat. Our boat was the best way. The cabins were small but comfortable. The food was tasty and the alcohol was plentiful. The ItineraryWe spent 5 days around the islands. We'd spend our days on the islands and the nights traveling between the islands. Mid-sized fast moving boats in the middle of the ocean is a recipe for sleeplessness. You'd be fast asleep, the boat would hit a wave, you'd bash your head and then, bam, you're awake again. On the islands we'd go for short hikes and see incredible things. There was also swimming, beach lounging, and snorkeling to be had. In terms of animals we saw surfing Sea Iguanas, albatross' mating dance, sea turtles swimming along as we snorkeled, pink flamingos doing their one leg thing, and of course lots and lots of sea lions :)HighlightThe highlight were the albatross, they are a spectacular bird in the air and incredibly awkward on the ground.LowlightTrying to pee in the middle of the night on a boat in extremely choppy water. I don't recommend it. | Photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/gdalesandre/2006Galapagos |
