WHAT IS KINO?
A low-budget filmmaking movement born in Montreal and gone global.

WHAT IS KINO SYDNEY?
The Sydney chapter of the Kino movement. Also refers to the monthly screenings.

WHAT IS KINO KABARET?
A special edition of Kino where films are made under 48 hours alongside international participants and with the benefit of a Kino Lab.

WHO CAN MAKE A FILM?
Anyone. From people who've never made a film before to Oscar-winners.

HOW ARE FILMS SELECTED?
They are not. While there is no pre-selection, feel free to act as if there was and make the best film possible. Come have a look at other films first, if you think you've got what it takes then take the plunge. Register to screen a film and that film will be screened, provided it obeys The Rules.

HOW DO I REGISTER TO SCREEN A FILM AT KINO SYDNEY?
You simply let us know by email the title and length of your film and the number of the screening at which you want it screened.

HOW DO I REGISTER TO TAKE PART IN THE NEXT KINO KABARET?
Make sure you are available for a session then send us the completed application form, which you can download here.

WHAT ARE THE RULES?

1. Films must be made for Kino and screened at the screening for which you registered to screen the film.
   
2. They must be under 5 minutes. If your film is longer we reserve the right not to show it.
   
3. They must be world premieres.
   
4. For monthly screenings they must be on DVD and for Kabarets they must be on MiniDV.
   
5. At the end of the film, the words (or logo) "Kino Sydney" must appear, followed by the screening number.

WHAT IF I BREAK THE RULES?
You get a challenge. You are given the subject or genre of your next film, and are not allowed to screen anything at Kino until you've screened your challenge film.

CAN I USE COPYRIGHT MUSIC WITHOUT PERMISSION?
If you do we will still screen your film, but we encourage you to seek out rights-free music or musicians who might want to lend you some tunes for free or even compose an original score. Check out our Music page on this site, or visit the Free Music Archive for cool tunes. 

WHAT IF I JUST WANT TO WATCH?
That's cool, simply come along to a screening. It won't be long before you want to make a film yourself...

WHAT IF I HAVE MADE A FILM BEFORE FINDING OUT ABOUT KINO, WHICH HAS NEVER BEEN SCREENED, CAN I SUBMIT IT TO A KINO NIGHT?
No. Your film needs to have been made specifically for a KINO screening.
