Research: The Key to Success

Too many people think that if you start up a business that you will be successful.  But to be successful in business requires a lot of hard work, and much of that hard work has nothing to do with the 'point of sale' activity.

Before you start a business, a lot of research is required. One type of research involves Demographics.

What does "Demographics" Mean?

Demographics - the study of, or information about, people's lifestyles, habits, population movements, spending, age, social grade, employment, etc., in terms of the consuming and buying public; anyone selling to the consumer sector will do better through understanding relevant demographic information.

If you want to sell 'baby clothes' for instance, it would not be a wise thing to open up your shop in an area where the major 'enterprise' is Education. If the local area is full of universities and middle schools, you would hardly expect the students to be coming in to buy baby clothes.

Likewise you would not open up a 'car sales' business in a poor farming community.

Before you start your business, you need to know something about the people in the area in which you plan to open shop. Do they have the money to buy what you are selling?  Are they the type of people who would buy your product?

When you go looking for a job, you are both the seller and the 'product' that you are selling.  Make sure that you are selling in the right place and that the people to whom you wish to sell, would be interested in buying your product.

Once you have a busines in operation, there is ongoing research to do to ensure continued prosperity.

Research keeps a Business competitive.

There are varieties of research that must be undertaken by any business that wishes to keep or to increase their market share.

A good business manager ensures that the Research covers all aspects of the business. For Example:
  • The most recent Legal, Political, and Economic Issues
  • Current Market Trends,
  • Technological Development,
  • Various Business Initiatives
  • Production costs,
  • Service and Product quality
  • Company development and expansion
  • Employee training,
  • Job satisfaction Surveys
  • Employee working conditions
  • Customer feedback and satisfaction
  • Brand or Business Name recognition
  • Advertising Media

How to Research.

There are various ways to research information. These include:
  • Asking questions of Business People
  • Inquiring at the Library
  • Reading Newspapers
  • Reading Magazines
  • Reading Business Journals
  • Reading Legal Journals
  • Searching the Internet
It amazes me that so many students do not know how to find the price of a plane ticket. It never occurs to some that they can just go to a travel agent and ask. It is that simple.

Some students complain that they did not know how to search the Internet. The truth is that until you begin to develop the habit of using the Internet for research purposes, you never will learn how to search.

Do you want to be successful?

Start researching now!  Ask yourself some hard questions.  Start with: 'What do I want to do for work in the future?'

When you know the answer to that, start researching to find out as much information as you can about that type of job, it's requirements and qualifications, and most importantly, what physcial steps you would have to take in order to get that job.

Don't just wait for it to happen by chance.  Research and Plan for it NOW!

Successful Businesses are not accidental. Someone somewhere, did their homework and worked out a plan or strategy.

When I ask 2nd year University students what career path they have chosen, far too many have no answer to give. They are just hoping everything works itself out to their advantage. Most have no greater plan than to get "A good job!".

In order to be successful in business, and in your life, you need to have both short term and long term plans. Even the Government has it's series of 5 year plans.

Governments, Businesses and the Scientific community are constantly researching because:

1. They don't want to fall behind the competition.

2. They constantly want to advance

3. They are constantly searching for new discoveries

4. They are constantly checking out the reliability of Past Data.

If you want to be successful in the future, then you need to begin planning your success NOW.

Start developing your quality product (you) now.

Begin the process of researching the market place demands (job opportunities and management requirements).

Make English learning less agonizing
By Raymond Zhou (China Daily)

A Chinese student with extremely high scores for American standardized tests was admitted into one of the Ivy League universities. But his professors soon found out that he could hardly understand them in the classroom. Suspecting that he cheated in the tests, school administrators demanded he repeat them. Again, he passed with flying colours.

Not till then did they awaken to the reality that the student had mastered the techniques for acing the tests, not necessarily the skills demonstrated in them.
