About these Resources

Google Earth is a rapidly moving target.  Almost every facet is changing, from the underlying topography and satellite imagery, to the applications that can be added.  Even the interface changes surprisingly often.

Assess your skills and behaviors in reference to the following levels.

Novice
  • Is unaware of the availability and utility of the web links relating to Google Earth.
  • Doesn't upgrade to new versions of Google Earth so is not impacted by changes or new opportunities.
Advanced Beginner
  • Checks a few of the General News and Assistance links but this is done on an irregular basis.
  • Tries some of the new features, especially if they are part of Google Earth.
  • Sometimes upgrades to new versions of Google Earth.
Competent
  • Is aware that Google Earth changes periodically and updates Google Earth when there is a change.
  • Seeks out assistance from blogs, like those in General News and Assistance, for ideas and help.
  • Tries new Google Earth features suggested in blogs regularly.
Proficient
  • Subscribes to several news feeds (blog update notifiers) and keeps current with what is happening with Google Earth.
  • Regularly tries new features in Google Earth.
  • Visits some of the Visualization and Technical blogs.
  • Contributes comments and other forms of assistance to one or more of the Google Earth community sites.
Expert
  • Participates in the Visualization and Technical blogs.

Ogle Earth Blog  Lots of new about Google Earth and how it is being used.
Google Earth Blog  "The Amazing things about Google Earth."
Google Earth Community  Official forum for the Google Earth Community.  Here is the Entrance to the Community site.
Collected Google Earth Wisdom  A very useful set mostly tutorial assistance, including some Youtube videos. Created by the Google Earth Community.
Google Earth Hacks  An unofficial site that is rich in resources, including an active forum.
Using Google Earth  Learn tricks and tips to explore your world more effectively in Google Earth. Maintained by someone on the Google Earth team.
Google Earth Library  "Interesting Things to do With Google Earth."

Google Earth Design  "Good design for your Google Earth map."  Useful commentaries on the use of Google Earth.

The Map Room  A mapping-oriented site that sometimes includes information about Google Earth.
Google Maps Mania Tracks the websites, mashups and tools being influenced by Google Maps
Free Map Tools Blog  Provides a number of useful tools

Google Maps Mania  Google Maps mashups, with lots of examples and technical information.
Google Planet  Professional GIS software. Often filled with interesting data and visualizations.

Planet Geospatial  If you really, really want to keep up with all the news, this is the place to visit, visit, visit.

Useful Tools

Gazetteers

Find coordinate locations, and often other information, by looking up a name in a gazetteer.  The Wikipedia link (see the bottom of the entry) has an extensive, annotated list of gazetteers.
