Google Earth Overlays

Introduction to Overlays

Maps and diagrams can be added to Google Earth.  Simple tools are provided to scale these overlays so that they match the area.  These overlays can completely hide the satellite information that is usually shown, or the overlay can be made partially opaque so that there is a blend of both the overlay and satellite information.

An overlay can be saved in My Places for future use.

  • Properly orients and sizes each overlay.
  • Controls opacity for different purposes.
  • Saves overlays for later use.
Proficient
  • Creates and applies overlays using mapping software.
  • Stores overlays on web pages so that other people can use them.
Expert
  • Writes software applications that create overlays.

Exercises: Applying a Stored Overlay

Novice, Advanced Beginner and Competent Users
  • Detailed description of the use of overlays and how they can be added (a Google Earth User Guide)
  • Tutorial video on placing an overlay on Google Earth
  1. Finding the Great Wall of China.  Apply an overlay by clicking this link.  Note that the overlay is just a rough approximation.  Use the panoramio photos to search closer.  Why does this work?
  2. We're going Welwitschia hunting in Namibia!  Click on this link and save the image (a map of a tour in Namibia) to your desktop.  Look at the map.  Location 12 is one of the Welwitschia sites.  Overlay this map on Namibia and see if there is a match to a Panaramio photo of a Welwitschia plant.
Proficient and Advanced Users
  1. How does the scale of the overlay generally match the 2D and 3D display of Google Earth?
  2. What are the situations in which you would recommend the use of an overlay in a 3D situation?
  3. Save an overlay on a web page and make a link so that other people can retrieve the overlay and have it placed properly on Google Earth.
  4. Email an overlay as an attachment.
