Did you know that Roman numerals were used in Europe well into the Middle Ages? So why don't we still use them? The numbers that we use today (what we know as Arabic numerals) were actually first used in India. During the 7th and 8th centuries, knowledge of these numbers was spread to Arab nations through trade. One of the important aspects of the Indian number system is that the written numbers indicated place value - although the numbers were written backwards to the way we write them now. So while we represent one hundred twenty three as 123, this was written as 321 in the Indian system. The Indian number system also used zero as a placeholder value ...

The Silk Road
The Silk Road was an important trade route in the middle ages. In
addition to wares that were traded, a great exchange of ideas took
place. These ideas included new concepts in mathematics and new
scientific understandings. Note that the silk road was not just one
route, but a series of trade routes that crisscrossed Asia, Africa,
Europe, and later the Indian and the South China sea. Here is a map of
the different trade routes along the Silk Road.
