Study title
  •  Acceptance of mobile phone eHealth: a study of health consumer perceptions
Overview
  • This is a qualitative research study for a PhD dissertation in Information Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA.
  • Health consumers view an introductory video explaining four uses of mobile phone eHealth: (1) interacting with health professionals; (2) taking health actions; (3) receiving health information; (4) managing heatlhcare services.
  • Semi-standardized interviews are then conducted about perceptions and acceptance of this technology.  Interviews are conducted via phone or in-person.
Participant recruitment
  • Currently, the priority is to interview:
    • Patients of chronic health conditions with mobile phone eHealth experience
    • Healthy individuals with mobile phone eHealth experience
  • Mobile phone eHealth is defined as the use of mobile phones for health services delivery and health promotion, particularly interacting with health professionals, taking health actions, receiving health information and managing healthcare services.
  • Chronic health conditions include asthma, diabetes, mental illnesses, arthritis, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, neurological disorders, chronic pain, autoimmune disorders, etc.

Research support requested

    • For example, identifying potential participants, suggesting agencies for contact and publicizing this research.

Compensation
  • Participants receive US$20 upon completion of study  - payable in foreign currencies as well.
Data collection
  • Semi-standardized phone and in-person interviews explore the following factors:
    • first impressions of mobile phone eHealth
    • perceived advantages
    • perceived disadvantages
    • perceived responses to this technology by other health consumers
    • perceived impact on health information behavior
    • perceived impact on health behavior change
    • acceptance of the technology
    • rationale for the acceptance decision
    • impact of perceptions on acceptance decision
    • proposed and preferred services
    • experience with general and mobile phone eHealth services
