King Elementary School maintains a comprehensive music program for
students in kindergarten through grade six, teaching through the
guidelines set forth in the Minnesota and national standards in art and
music education.
Music experiences focus on the elemental areas of music including
rhythm, melody, harmony, form, timbre, expression, style and history.
Activities include singing, listening, moving, playing instruments,
reading and creating.
The vocal music classes have performed regularly in holiday
concerts, world folk song and dance festivals, children's musical
theatre productions and occasional, other special programs of singing,
dancing and recorder ensembles. Upper elementary students
traditionally experience sequential steps to part-singing, paving the
way to junior and senior high choral programs. Students
in the fifth and sixth grades have an opportunity to participate in the
elementary band program which offers weekly lessons and full band
rehearsals. Performances have included concerts, solos and ensembles,
pep rally music, incidental program music and holiday hallway/lunch
room music. The elementary band program serves a vital role in
preparing students for the junior and senior high instrumental music
programs.
