IOPNA Endorses Candidates for Isle of Palms Municipal Election 2009

The Isle of Palms Municipal election will take place on Tuesday November 3, 2009. Island voters will select a mayor and four city council members in this important election. In order to identify candidates’ positions on issues of concern to our residents, the IOPNA submitted nine questions to all candidates and invited their participation.  Five of the eight candidates chose to respond.  Three did not respond.

Both mayoral candidates, Jimmy Ward and Dick Cronin, responded.

Three City Council candidates responded:

Doug Thomas, Barb Gobien and Barbara Bergwerf.

Three City Council candidates chose not to respond to our questions:

Sandy Stone, Ron Denton and Marty Bettelli

The candidates’ responses are posted on the IOPNA website. Please check them out at www.iopna.org

The IOPNA Board of Directors met on Monday, September 28, 2009 to discuss the candidates’ responses and lack thereof and to decide whether to endorse candidates. Why does the IOPNA endorse candidates? Well, endorsement means that the candidates see the island as a community not a commodity.  They value the quality of life and the preservation of neighborhoods. Their only financial interest in the Isle of Palms is the home that they own.

We are pleased to announce that the Board endorses the following candidates for IOP City Council:

Barbara Bergwerf, Barb Gobien and Douglas Thomas

The Board also endorses Dick Cronin for mayor.

The candidates we are endorsing are running independent campaigns.  We encourage you to get to know them and their issues and get out and vote on November 3, 2009.

The next step is the November 3 election. Vote for our endorsed candidates: Barbara, Barb and Doug.

The candidates can use your support to help pay for signs and cards. If you would like to support them, please contribute directly to their campaigns. You can contact them at

The Observer Corps 19 Months Later

posted ‎‎Aug 16, 2009 7:49 AM‎‎ by System Administrator   [ updated ‎‎Aug 16, 2009 8:17 AM‎‎ ]

THE OBSERVER CORPS 19 MONTHS LATER

By Diane Oltorik, Chairperson, Observer Corps

Two hundred plus is the number of meetings our dedicated observers have attended.  On January 9, 2008, at the first annual IOPNA meeting, the Observer Corps was initiated.  It had several names of origin until “Observer Corps” was finally settled on.  But the desire to create a successful corps of observers did not need any impetus!  And so, on January 10, ONE DAY AFTER the first IOPNA organizational meeting, we were off and running and the first observer attended the Accommodations Tax Advisory Committee meeting, commonly known as ATAX.  And this dedicated, service oriented cadre of residents is still attending the city meetings faithfully.

At first, it was difficult to get enough volunteers so that each meeting would have at least two observers that could take turns covering a meeting.  Most of the meetings are during normal working hours, so that made it impossible for working people to volunteer. But eventually we managed to work the Corps up to a group of 26 volunteers.  And we never missed one meeting as we built our volunteer list.  It didn’t take us long to find our rhythm and become a smooth operation.   Originally, the Observer Corps covered 13 meetings a month as follows:  Public Works, Public Safety, Personnel, Recreation, Real Property, ATAX, Planning. Board of Zoning Appeals (commonly known as BOZA), Water & Sewer, Ways & Means, Livability Court, City Council, and IOP Bus Council.  The latter is now defunct, so as of last fall, we cover 12 meetings a month.

Our observer reports are just that, observations and not minutes.  The city creates minutes, and sometimes those are not available for a month, but our intention is to observe nuances, what discussions lead to votes and to take notes, without any possible sanitizing.  The reports are sent in a timely fashion by e-mail to either me or our President, Catherine Malloy.   All the reports are then posted on our IOPNA web site.  Many have told us they get an enormous amount of information from these postings.  Even the former mayor commented to several of our members that this is where he learns the most about the issues on our island!

At first the idea of an observer corps was ridiculed by some and many were perplexed by what we wanted to accomplish; but eventually, we caused our government entities to sit up and take notice.  It is now a foregone conclusion that a member of the IOPNA’s Observer Corps will be at every meeting the City of IOP holds.  The Observer Corps was the IOPNA’s early and first major success.  It has made a difference in quality of life issues and shown that the IOPNA is an organization that wants to not only be a voice for residents’ concerns, but also to be a unifier by creating a balance between residential and business interests.  It just reinforces the concept that an engaged citizenry is an informed citizenry.

This group of 26 observers is still going strong.  As chairperson of the Observer Corps, I am so proud of what these dedicated individuals do.  As we begin our 18th month of observing city meetings, I believe we will continue to make a difference in how our city government functions.   Care to join us?

IOPNA Endorses Barbara Bergwerf for City Council

posted ‎‎May 11, 2009 3:18 PM‎‎ by System Administrator

We are pleased to announce our support for the candidacy of Barbara Bergwerf for City Council.  The election is May 12, 2009.  Barbara is no stranger to many of us on the island as she contributes to the life of the Isle of Palms in many ways.  But what many of us may not know are the facts about her background.

Barbara brings a wealth of multidimensional experience, knowledge and skills for a position on city council. From her collegiate education at George Washington University, Washington, DC in Government and International Relations to her photojournalist career in the nation’s third largest city, Chicago, to her work as a small business owner in Chicago, Barbara has demonstrated leadership, vision and the capacity to get things done.

Barbara spent 15 years as a Photo Journalist in Chicago and was the first female photographer hired by the Chicago Tribune.  For 22 years, she was the founder and CEO of “Stained Glass & More”, a national award winning custom stained glass studio.  In her role as CEO, She not only conceived the idea of the business but also launched and managed it and took a hands on approach as she oversaw the design, creation and installation of projects for churches, schools, synagogues, restaurants and private homes. She managed the business with as many as seven employees at any given time, prepared budgets, schedules and training for employees.

She and her husband Ben discovered the Isle of Palms and dedicated themselves to making it their home after retirement. The talent, creativity and energy for contributing to her community led her to dedicating herself to the IOP community through a number of volunteer activities. Even before living on the IOP full time, Barbara was a member of the Turtle Team and that role evolved to her being one of the “leaders” of the Turtle Team.  She is a “permitted volunteer” with the Department of Natural Resources Sea Turtle Stranding Network. She also serves as the photographer and a volunteer for the SC Aquarium and the Sea Turtle Hospital and as a volunteer with the Center For Birds of Prey.  Barbara is the photographer for two award winning children's books "Carolina's Story" and "Turtle Summer.

Barbara is currently serving her second term as a member of the IOP Planning Commission. Residents speak to her responsiveness in listening and acting on their concerns.

Barbara sees the Isle of Palms as a special place to live and one requiring stewardship and protection. We are fortunate to have an individual of her caliber stepping up to serve the IOP community."

Please see her position on issues.

IOPNA General Meeting - Minutes

posted ‎‎Apr 1, 2009 3:53 PM‎‎ by System Administrator

IOPNA General Membership Meeting
Friday, March 27, 2009
Isle of Palms Exchange Club, Palm Blvd.

WELCOME and PRESIDENT’S COMMENTS
The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m. by President Malloy, after a half hour social with food and drinks provided by members. Catherine welcomed and thanked the 50 plus attendees for coming. She reiterated the mission of the Neighborhood Association and urged all to tell neighbors and friends about our great organization.

MAY 12, 2009 CITY COUNCIL ELECTION
Catherine reminded all to get out and vote on election day. If one will not be in town for the election, they can vote absentee. She introduced Barbara Bergwerf as the candidate the IOPNA is endorsing. Barb spoke about her life here on the island, her service to the community and her goals if elected. She was met with enthusiastic applause after her speech. President Malloy urged supporters to make campaign donations if possible and asked for help with actual door to door campaigning to garner support for Barbara. There are election materials available: stickers, brochures, etc. She asked members if they were willing to have “meet and greet” parties at their homes to introduce Barb to others.

TREASURERS REPORT
M. J. O’Brien gave the treasurer’s report. She urged folks to make donations and revealed the new IOPNA t-shirts that are for sale for $12 each. Catherine then reported on the upcoming IOP Yard Sale, where  the Association will have a booth selling household items, hard-back books, etc. Donations are to be taken to Jane McMackin’s house on 32nd St. Jane is in charge of the sale and welcomed any help pricing items and manning the booth. She claimed it would be a fun event!

VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORTs
Neighborhood Representatives: Jane McMackin called out the names of the reps and had them stand to introduce them to all. Paul Reddy and Ann Evans talked about the importance of the representatives in getting out the vote. We are certain we helped Dick Cronin win the Mayor’s race. After the meeting lists will be handed out to the reps and they can go ahead and start calling or stopping by neighbors to ask them to support Barb Bergwerf.

WEBSITE
President Malloy urged all to check the IOPNA website, to keep up to date on events and activities. There will campaign information offered there.

CAMPAIGN FOR BARB
Ralph Piening spoke eloquently on our need to get Barbara elected. She will continue to do the work to protect our island and its neighborhoods. There was much applause and cheering.

IOPNA Board Member to Run for Council Seat

Spring Fling Meeting
Sunny days are ahead! The cloudy, damp conditions will give way to clear skies and warmer weather soon. With the idea of spring fling in mind, our plans are moving forward for our IOPNA meeting on Friday March 27, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. at the IOP Exchange Club. The purpose of the meeting is to share important information about the May 12, 2009 City Council election, upcoming social events and other news of import to our neighbors.

Of utmost importance is the happy news that one of our own Board members, Barb Bergwerf, is a candidate for the City Council seat vacated by Dick Cronin who won the mayoral election. Come out and show your support for Barb. We will have more information for you at the meeting.

We are asking you to bring something to munch on: be it appetizers, snacks, or sweets. We will provide the wine, beer and water.  Also, we are calling for volunteers to assist us in setting up for the meeting and for cleaning up afterwards. Please let me know if you would be able to help by emailing me or calling at the number listed on this email.

An agenda for the meeting will be sent prior to March 27, 2009.

Just a little inside politics information in case you are interested: the word is State Representative Mike Sottile was instrumental in assisting Ron Denton to complete his petition package so that he could challenge Barb for the council seat.

Come to the meeting and spend some time with your neighbors before the hectic spring season unfolds. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

Warm Regards

Catherine

Announcement of IOPNA's 1st Nancy Stogner Award

posted ‎‎Mar 19, 2009 11:52 AM‎‎ by System Administrator

The IOPNA created a memorial award in Nancy Jane (Moss) Stogner’s name to be given annually to a member of the IOPNA who best typifies the principles for which Nancy stood.  Nancy Moss Stogner was a resident of the Isle of Palms whose “civic activity grew out of her love for people being good neighbors, simple natural beauty, and the smooth operation of organizations which make up the social fabric” (quoted by Coker Stogner, Nancy’s husband). The IOPNA award in Nancy’s name is awarded to an IOPNA member for outstanding contribution to the Isle of Palms community through civic engagement with city government.

We would like our IOPNA family and our friends and neighbors to know a little more about Nancy who passed away on September 9, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. Nancy grew up in Meridan , Connecticut and went on to earn a baccalaureate in history from Bates college in Maine and a Master’s degree in Education from Boston University and a Certificate in the education of the blind and visually impaired from Perkin’s School for the Blind in Watertown, Massachusetts where she taught for one year. She was an itinerant teacher of the blind and visually impaired for children mainstreamed in public and private schools in New Jersey from 1961 to June 1997 with time out to raise two children, Eric and Pam.  Nancy was as passionate about being involved in her childrens’ activities during their growing years as she was in her community involvement throughout her life.
A sampling of her community contributions follow:
  • Successfully gathered enough signatures on a petition to legally block a developer from building a high rise apartment building in a residential neighborhood that happened to be near rail and bus commutation to New York City;
  • Active with the Parent Teacher organization where she joined a group opposing the Board of Education’s plan to close two neighborhood elementary schools and succeeded in electing a slate of members to the Board in the next election for three consecutive elections.  She was appointed to the local Republican Committee;
  • Nominated for her volunteer work in preschool vision screening as chair of the Braille Committee of the Junior Women’s Club;
  • Named as one of America’s outstanding women of the year in 1972 by the Watchung Area Junior Women’s Club;
  • Appreciated the need for organized structure which is the fabric of society and believed that in this democracy, we are the government that determines what happens to our communities;
  • Served the Isle of Palms without ever holding office by her participation in city meetings and commissions.  It is fair to say that she probably attended more meetings than any elected official;
  • Served as a poll worker for the Isle of Palms for years;
  • Belonged to many organizations including the Church of the Holy Cross, IOP Keenagers; East Cooper Newcomers and its book and couples’ bridge group; East Cooper Women’s Club; Christ Church Preservation Society; Charleston Genealogical Society; Isle of Palms Garden Club; Council of Garden Clubs of Greater Charleston; and family genealogical societies; the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Fort Sullivan’s Chapter, the IOPNA and other less formal groups.
Nancy loved personal relationships and enjoyed creating circumstances where relationships could flourish. Nancy called the Isle of Palms her slice of paradise.
The IOPNA saw in Nancy’s efforts evidence of her love for people and her commitment to the thorough and efficient operation of government in behalf of the people it represents.  We chose to create an award in her name as a way in which to continue her legacy.  This year’s first annual award was presented to Diane Oltorik, chair of the IOPNA Observer Corps.
