Creating a place on the web

There are many ways to create your own corner on the web for teaching and learning.  Some of use open websites some of us use closed course management systems, commonly refered to as learning management systems, while some of us use all of three.  This page attempts to break down the basic components of Creating your place on the web.

Creating your own website

One option for creating your own website is to use Google as they have now made some exciting tools for building pretty advanced websites nearly free.  We are using Google sites so we will be teaching how to use Google Apps for building your own site(s).  For a complete reference on using Google Apps check out their administrator help online.
  1. Get started by creating your own Google Apps account.
  2. You may want your own domain name like www.MyWonderfulMathWorld.com which you can set up during the registration process for 10 per year.
  3. Decide whether you want to start with a simple web page or a complete site.  What is the difference? Glad you asked. Web Pages - Allow you to create simple, professional looking information pages while Sites - allow you more functionality with a little less formatting.
  4. So, looks like you decided to start with a web page, good choice! Let's get started.
  5. When you create your Google Apps account you will receive a link to the "Control Panel".  When you access the control panel, click on the link labeled "Web Pages" to start building your own web pages.

  6. On the Web Pages screen select edit web pages to launch the web page editor.

Building your course with in a course management system

Depending on what type of school and where you teach you may have the ability to create a course using a course management system.  Some of the most popular course management systems are Moodle, Angel, Blackboard, Sakai and Desire2Learn just to name a few.  We will be developing content relevant to each of the course management systems we have experience with.
