Read about Meter and try your hand at it

posted ‎‎Nov 9, 2009 10:23 AM‎‎ by Thomas Hinkle

Homework for tonight consists of three steps (please don't spend more than 45 minutes on this):

1. Review the meter handout from class (attached)
2. Pick on of the poems assigned thus far (or another poem you know that is in meter) to imitate. You should not pick a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem, as he uses an idiosyncratic meter that will be harder to imitate.
3. Identify the structure of the poem you've read -- attempt to break each line into poetic feet and count how many feet the line has and in what pattern.
4. Write a "poem" of your own that imitates the structure. Note: I only care about structure for this assignment. If you're having trouble thinking of content, write about a TV show you watch, or write the story of Gatsby's death in poetic form, or write about how hard this assignment is.
