Honor Killings Discussion

In class, we will have a 50 minute student-led discussion on the practice of honor killings.  We will discuss FoxNews' video, "Murder in the Family: Honor Killings in America" and look at the practice of honor killings from a gender perspective as we examine the power of men and women in the world.

Honor Killings Poster

Directions:
1. Create a poster that advocates for or against honor killings.
             - Create a catchy slogan.
             - Use at least 1 engaging image.
             - The poster must be polished, look professional (neat) and cannot be done solely in pencil.
2.  Type up a 1/2 -1 page explanation of your poster.
             - What argument are you making?
             - What symbols or images did you use?

In class, we watched FoxNews Special video, "Murder in the Family: Honor Killings in America."  This 43 minute video is an introduction to the effects that long-standing patriarchal traditions continue to have throughout the world and in our own backyard. 

What are honor killings?

"Across the Islamic world, hundreds of women are shot, stabbed, strangelled or burned to death each year by their male relatives because they are thought to have dishonored their families by engaging in unacceptable relationships...at least 5,000 women worldwide each year are murdered under the pretext of 'honor killings'...While the victims of honor killings are overwhelmingly female, tradition dictates that males involved in the 'crimes' should face death as well" (www.gendercide.org).

Today we explored the use of child soldiers around the world.  In addition, we looked at the different roles that boy and girl soldiers have as child soldiers and made connections to what this says about the power of men and women around the world.
 
Homework:
Write a poem where you explain (1) what child soldiers are, (2) how it affects both the girls and boys who fight, and (3) your reaction to this practice of teaching children to kill.  Your poem should have a MINIMUM of 10 lines.

Over the last few days, we have explored the role of men and women throughout the world.  Through this exploration, we have discussed the inequalities and unequal share of power that men and women have because of their gender.

 

Your task is to create a comic strip OR write a children’s story that will educate individuals on the different roles and power that people have as a result of their gender throughout the world. 

 

Specific directions are on the attached "Gender Unit Comic Strip Homework" attachment.
