Newcastle University International Development Conference

About IDC

IDCs are courses into which development professionals distil the crucial issues people should be aware of to be a global citizen and, especially, before participating in development interventions themselves.

The International Development Conferences are one day events currently run at Oxford and Cambridge with the aim of increasing awareness of development issues at universities.

Want to hear about International Development?

International Development Conferences (IDCs) are one day events which aim to highlight some of the key issues in the world of international development. Several universities around the country host the events, which are organised by students for students. The conference is a great opportunity to hear professionals and experts give their views and share their knowledge. It is a chance to learn new things and is a good addition to your CV to show your interest, awareness and engagement with current world issues.

Millenium Development Goals

The focus of this year's conference in Newcastle is the United Nations Millenium Development Goals. These aims were set by the UN with a target date of 2015, and are all essential for successful progress in developing countries. The 8 goals are:

  • Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
  • Achieve universal primary education
  • Promote gender equality and empower women
  • Reduce child mortality
  • Improve maternal health
  • Combat AIDS/HIV, Malaria and other diseases
  • Ensure environmental sustainability
  • Develop a global partnership for development

For more detailed information about the MDGs visit the official website:

There will be speakers from a range of areas to discuss some issues related to the goals, the progress that has been made towards them, how far there is still to go and what must be done if the goals are to be achieved.
