Scholarships

The Italian American Heritage Foundation offers scholarships each school year. The scholarships encourage and assist young people in the pursuit of better educational opportunities and offer to help students meet their financial needs. An additional aim is to help stimulate more interest in Italian culture among young people. Our essay contests for high school students promote a greater understanding and appreciation of the positive contributions of Italian Americans.

The scholarship applications are open to seniors of attending a high school in Santa Clara County, or as a dependent of an I.A.H.F. member. The applicants major can be in any academic field. Interested applicants should request an application from the I.A.H.F. Scholarship Committee, 425 North Fourth Street, San Jose CA 95112; or phone 408-293-7122.

2009 Scholarship Winners

 The IAHF is proud to announce the 2009 IAHF Scholarship Recipients

 
 
 
 Courtney Hampton
Recipient of $2,000 from the Diana Hurst Scholarship Fund

  Courtney graduated from Homestead High School with honors. She will be attending University of California at Santa Barbara with a major in Literature. Courtney hopes to become a high school English/Literature teacher. She also aspires to being a writer, experiencing life from many points of view, cultivating a world of understanding that will influence a multitude of people.


  Courtney states that being an athlete has taught her teamwork, communication, and most importantly, balance. She has been involved in many community projects and participated in building houses in Tijuana Mexico. Courtney strongly believes that one should always give back to their community and her volunteering work has exposed her to some of the hardships of life that those less fortunate must face everyday.


  Courtney states “I am a sympathetic and compassionate person; I believe that these characterist6ics will enable me to become an insightful writer and a helpful and understanding teacher”


  Courtney’s family is from Calabria noted for its regal mountains, crystal waters, rich history and agriculture. Being Italian for Courtney means a love of life, people, endless conversations and laughter. Her family is all about relationships and connections, they carry respect for their elders, the work they have done to make their lives better, and their wisdom that has been accumulated through hard times.


 David Cannon
Recipient of $2,000 from IAHF Scholarship Fund

  David graduated from Live Oak High School with honors. He will be attending Boise State University majoring in Electrical Engineering and completing his graduate work at Stanford University. After his studies David plans to specialize in the “Green” business. His aspirations for a job would include alternate fuel cells for cars, boats, and planes.


  David feels that devotion is an important quality of life and with it one can succeed in anything that you set your mind. Having this quality states David, makes a person driven, center minded, who will benefit the community with a positive attitude and a contribution that will improve their way of life.


   Recently, David has taken more of an interest into his Italian heritage studying the Ancient Roman ways and lifestyle. David has traveled to Italy with his family and stated that being exposed to so much history has made him very proud to be an Italian and it has given him a greater insight on how tradition plays a large role in modern household.

 Morgan Sellers
Recipient of $2,000 from IAHF Scholarship Fund

  Morgan graduated from Archbishop Mitty High School with honors. She will be attending Gonzaga University in Spokane Washington majoring in pre-law. In her senior year as a lead prosecutor Morgan’s interest in law was intensified. Morgan hopes to couple this love of law with her love of service by practicing law for the United States Navy, giving back to the country that has given her so many opportunities. Morgan also plans to study in Florence Italy bringing her heritage into her collegiate years.


  Morgan states she’s very proud of her Italian heritage. As a young child she began to appreciate and understand her heritage through the loving relationship she had with her “Nana”who came from Naples. She explains that her grandmother’s strength, love for life and family, has influenced her very much and is a constant reminder that no matter what happens she can face her problems without fear. While in high school Morgan kept her heritage alive by being involved in the Italian Club at Mitty and plans to establish one at Gonzaga University to continue to share her heritage and culture with the world.
