Candy Donation Drive
 Tuesday, November 10, 2009

Everyone wins when you share your Halloween loot -- our kids' health; soldiers serving overseas and the Hunnewell PTO!

Donations of Halloween candy are being accepted at Hunnewell.  The candy will be delivered to the Wellesley Dental Group on Wednesday.  The Wellesley Dental Group will send the candy to troops overseas (via Special Kindness in Packages, Inc).  The Wellesley Dental Group will make a financial contribution to the school for the candy collected.

Simply place your donated candy into a ziplock bag, label with Hunnewell School and place your "loot" into the collection binds for Hunnewell Helps (top of ramp by office).

Cradles to Crayons Week in Wellesley

It's not too late to participate in Cradles to Crayons Week in Wellesley!  On Saturday, November 7th, families from every school in town will gather at the Babson College Athletic Center from 9:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. for the 3rd annual Family Volunteer Day.  Join us for an hour or two and sort toys, books, and clothing that have been generously donated by local families.  Thanks to all the Hunnewell families who have donated items or signed up for a shift on Saturday, and a special thank you to the Hunnewell 5th grade students who enthusiastically helped take care of donations during morning drop-off!

Register for the Family Volunteer Day by sending an email with your availability. If you still have items to donate, please bring them directly to the Babson College Athletic Center on Saturday.

Kindergarten and 5th grade CARES Food Drive

The kindergarten and 5th grade classes are still accepting donations for the Wellesley Food Pantry drive.  Canned goods, boxed foods, paper products, and personal items (no sample sizes, please) may be brought to school and placed in the wooden bin near the main office marked "Wellesley Food Pantry".  Please drop off donations until November 13th.  Many thanks to the families who have participated in this important project.

Creative Arts & SciencesNew WHS

This month, the second, third and fifth graders will enjoy exciting Creative Arts & Sciences programs made possible through contributions to the PTO by the Hunnewell community.

This past Wednesday November 4th, Lynn Littlefield Hoopes joined the third grade students in the classroom.  They wrote poetry from photos they had taken of small creatures such as:  Hummingbirds, chipmunks, caterpillars in the garden, painted turtle hatchlings and more.  She warmed up their imaginations creating a poem together, exploring the concept of capturing a moment with vivid verbs, details and similes.

The fifth grade students will welcome Paulette Morin, M.Ed., President of Fun with Science Programs on November 16th.  Paulette is very interested in ancient Egyptian culture, art and history.  She created the Having Fun with Pyramids and Pharaohs program which is designed to help bring her interest and knowledge into the classroom to augment the traditional ancient history curriculum.   She will bring a PowerPoint presentation and a large display of ancient Egyptian replicas and jewelry into the classroom.

On November 18th, the New England Aquarium's Outreach program will come to visit second graders with a Traveling Tide Pool.  After setting up their exhibits in the Art Room, scientists from the aquarium will help the students discover how coastal animals have adapted to life in their environments by examining three different shoreline habitats.  This program is always a favorite of the students as it is wet, fun, and educational.  It features interactive exhibit areas with intimate, hands on activities.

Stay tuned for details on December's Creative Arts & Science programs!
