Hunnewell School News
Letter From the PTO President

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It seems hard to believe that November is soon coming to a close and Thanksgiving is less than a week away.  It is a time to reflect on how much we have, how much we have accomplished and how the people around us lend to our good fortune. It is a time to give thanks, show our gratitude and remind ourselves just how lucky we are.

Here at Hunnewell our lives have been busy and blessed by many events:

v  We marched for Halloween, we danced thru the Sock Hop and we smiled for Picture Day feeling lucky to have such a close community.

v  We listened to our children's teachers at conferences and learned how fortunate we are to have such bright and compassionate educators.

v  We shared coffee and conversation with our principal and experienced how supportive both she and other parents can be in an open forum.

v  We gave generously and with charitable hearts through both our food and toy drives. We even collected for UNICEF while we trick or treated.

v  We paid attention to guidelines and have remained a healthy community through a pandemic of swine flu encroaching our schools.

v  We donated our time and talent in numerous volunteer positions this fall with grace.

It is for these times and for the community that made them happen for which I am grateful. I am appreciative and indebted for each parent and teacher that contribute each day. I am reminded of such graces as I hear the young voices and laughter filling our Hunnewell hallways.

It is my hope as you gather and celebrate this holiday you too are reminiscent of this first quarter of a wonderful school year.

I wish all of you a happy & healthy Thanksgiving.

 Warmly,

New WHS

Sherry

Hunnewell Book FairNew WHS
December 1 - 4, 2009

After Thanksgiving break, Hunnewell is hosting our second book fair, with Book Ends. Book Ends is a local company that stocks high quality books with little to no commercialism. There will be over 900 titles for sale at the book fair.

Please consider working a one hour shift at the book fair. The PTO is responsible for the complete staffing of this event (check in and restocking). Book Ends sets-up and dismantles the fair. Please volunteer here online or contact Shelly Ward via email or at 781-235-7256.

All Hunnewell students will visit the book fair during the first week of December although no purchasing will take place during school hours. The students will simply have the opportunity to look at books and make personal wish lists, which we will share with parents.

The book fair will be open for shopping:

Wednesday, Dec 2 from 12noon-2:00pm and 7-9:00pm*
Thursday, Dec 3 from 3:00 - 5:00pm
Friday, Dec 4 from 3:00 - 5:00pm

* Wednesday's 7-9pm Cafe Night is open to adults only to enable holiday gift shopping for children. Desserts and beverages will be served.
If you have questions, please contact Meredith Roy at 781-416-9889.

Holiday Sing-A-Long at Glen Grove

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, December 8th, as Hunnewell Helps students, along with the Hunnewell Girl Scouts, visit Glen Grove for our annual holiday sing-a-long. The residents of Glen Grove (our neighbors across the street from school) always look forward to seeing our students.  We will meet in the music room and walk over to Glen Grove as a group. Pickup will be back at school.  Spread some holiday spirit by participating in this event!  Questions?  Contact Wendi McKenna or Mary Young.

Men Read at Hunnewell
 Yearbook Pic

Based on research that says that boys and girls do not see men as readers, and building on the extremely successful Men Read at Hunnewell event we held last June, we are inviting men to read at Hunnewell again.

On Monday ,December 14th from 8:45 to 9:30, teachers will welcome male volunteers into their classrooms to read to small groups of children from books the men bring with them. These men will either already work at the school, be parents, grandparents, older brothers, etc. to children who attend Hunnewell, or are children, friends, or partners of faculty members. We are anticipating a hugely successful and joyful event. If you want to be assigned to a classroom, please contact Mrs.O'Brien at 781-446-6275 ext.400 or barbara_o'brien@wellesley.k12.ma.us.

Thank You!Sock Hop Pic

The Social/Hospitality Committee would like to thank everyone who scooped, poured, provided coolers, checked-in guests, made sure food stayed in the cafeteria, prevented things from getting too wild in the gym, snapped pictures, made images of us appear on the big screen and provided fun craft projects on Friday night.  In other words, Thank You to all the tireless volunteers who helped make the Sock Hop a fun evening for the whole Hunnewell community.

Special thanks to:

Roche Bros. for donating the ice cream and root beer;
AMC Framingham 16 for donating the popcorn;

Questions about METCO?  We've got answers!

On Wednesday, Wellesley METCO Program Director, Kalise Jacobs, spoke to the Hunnewell PTO Board at their monthly meeting.  Twenty minutes turned into sixty minutes with the engaging dialogue and questions that the board members had for Kalise.  We realized that a regular Q&A column in the newsletter might be helpful for the rest of the community to understand more about the METCO program.  So...here's the first installment!

Question: How many METCO students are at Hunnewell and how is the number of students each year determined?

Answer:  This year we have 8 students: 1 kindergartener, 3 second graders, and 4 fourth graders.  Three of the children are brand new to Hunnewell.  The key determinant of the new number of students who start each year is the current class size: eg., in which grades we can add new students without putting any classroom at or above the school district class-size guidelines.  Once we know how many new students can attend Hunnewell, Kalise Jacobs reviews the multi-year waiting list at METCO, Inc. and invites families to come to Wellesley/Hunnewell.

In this weekly Q&A format, we'll try to cover a range of METCO-related information including its history, goals, challenges, and how to strengthen the ties between the Boston and Wellesley families.  Please submit any questions you may have to the office or directly to either Betsy Komjathy or Ron Cobb.

Thanks!
