President's Message - Fall 2009
The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) budget will be cut again soon to handle a projected $100 million to $200 million shortfall in 2010-2011. That’s a two followed by eight zeros, and that’s a big number. It comes to more than $1,000 per student for every student in the system. It is just not possible for cuts of this magnitude to be made for the second year in a row without there being a substantial impact on every student in our system. This is especially true when as much as 85 percent of the system’s budget is labor related. How can the FCPS cut $200 million in salaries and not impact the classroom? It can ...

Principal's Message - Fall 2009
Dear Hayfield Secondary Families:
As fall gets underway,
we will soon begin our academic achievement celebrations including the
first quarter Honor Roll for high school students and the Honor
breakfasts for middle school teams. I’m very proud
to announce that Hayfield has been notified that two of its students
are currently 2010 National Merit Semi-finalist Scholars, two more are
National Merit Commended Scholars, and yet another achieved National
Hispanic Recognition Scholar status based on prior
PSAT scores. We will celebrate these students at the fall Academic
Awards Program and again at the Senior Awards ceremony later in the
spring. At the time of this writing, we were just concluding the
administration of the Princeton Review (composed of released ...

Hayfield Secondary's Debate Team has a "good" problem -- the group is growing by leaps and bounds! The faculty sponsor of the Hayfield Debate Team, Ms. Charity Fisher, is seeking at least two parents to help at team practices on Wednesday afternoons from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Debate Team has grown from 5-8 people before Ms. Fisher took over to 18-22 last year and 43 members this year. She has had some help from Ms. Merz, another HSS faculty member, but could really use some additional help from other adults to give debaters feedback regarding speaking skills, delivery and organization, and to watch the debates. If you are interested and willing to help, please contact Ms. Charity Fisher at cmfisher@fcps.edu. |

On Friday, November 6, the Hayfield Secondary football team plays the Edison Eagles football team at Edison High School for our District football Championship. It's been a very long time since our football team has had this level of success, and it's something to be celebrated. While not fair to the other teams or sports at Hayfield, the fact is that the fate of a school's football team affects school spirit and pride more than any other sport. That's just a fact. So, what we have here is the chance for a truly positive boost to Hayfield's spirit and pride. We all volunteer with the PTSA to help our school. I urge you to attend the game and help our school even more by publicly supporting the football team this Friday.
The Marching Band will be there, en masse - not to march, and not in their formal uniforms - but dressed alike (in band T-shirts) and serving as a HUGE Pep Band for the team. The Band Parents will be there, too, and I hope you will be as well.
As you know, the team is operating without its Head Coach - Billy Pugh, who is on the faculty at HSS as well - and has dedicated its season to him. Fox 5 TV is considering the game for its "Game of the Week." (BTW, you can vote to make this happen at: www.myfoxdc.com. You can vote once a day, every day. Please vote for Hayfield!) That would get the game featured on its news cast with video tape, interviews, etc. What fun! If the team could look up into the stands on their side of the field and see a cheering throng, they'd get such a boost. And they deserve it. The team has gone 7-2 this year - and is undefeated in our District - which is more wins than we've had since South County Secondary was created several years ago.
The game is at 7:30 p.m., and Edison HS is only a couple miles from the Hayfield area, at the intersection of Van Dorn Street and Franconia Road. Please be there, AND WEAR ORANGE! GO Hawks! |

Each year, Hayfield Secondary parents pitch in to help with the
Homecoming Dance, which is scheduled this year for Saturday
October 24. There are three stations (check-in, the "shoe
station" and the water station), and parent volunteers are asked to work one of two separate shifts. The first shift is from 7:30-9:30 p.m. and the second shift is from 9:30-11:30 p.m.
If you can help, please email Valerie Center to let her know what shift you are able to work, and work stations
will be assigned closer to the event. Thanks in advance for considering this opportunity to help!
