Daniel James began studying Aikido in the early 90's whilst a student at Griffith University, after dabbling in a number of other arts. Later he joined Aikido Yuishinkai when Maryuama Sensei emerged from seclusion in 2002. Receiving permission to teach, he established some Griffith Aikido dojos together with John Ward. A seminar junkie, he continues to dabble in other arts and train with aikidoka from other styles where possible. His profession has allowed him to practice aikido overseas including several visits to Japan. He holds dan grades from Aikido Yuishinkai and the Ki Society, including some honary awards.
He is currently a researcher at Griffith University in Sports and Biomedical Engineering with the Queensland Academy of Sport's Centre of Excellence. He has written articles on the physics of Aikido and Ki as well as doing some research on the dynamics of sword swing. Some of these have been published .
