Materials Needed for Class

You will need to purchase some things for this class, but you should not have to spend more than $10.

1) Notebook. You will be required to take notes on paper in this class. There are several reasons for this that will be outlined to you in the first few days of class. I would recommend a composition book or spiral notebook. You will be taking pictures of work in your notebook rather than constantly turning-in papers like you would in a traditional classroom. A three ring binder is not necessary, but feel free to use the type of notebook which makes you most comfortable.

2) Graph paper. You will need graphing or quadrilateral paper in this class. Some problems will need to be completed on graph paper. You can buy a pack of 50-100 sheets of this paper, and that should suffice for this school year. You might also consider one of those composition books filled with graph paper rather than ruled paper and just make that your class notebook. Here is a link to some graph paper that you can print out yourself (if you have a printer at home).

3) Ruler and protractor. These are two separate items, but you can buy them bundled together at the Dollar Store. You do not need a fancy ruler and protractor, but I would recommend that they be plastic and transparent.

4) Compass. I would recommend one of these metal compasses. You can find something similar at Walmart, Staples, or the Dollar Store. I have not found a good plastic compass, so I would avoid those.

5) Pencil. Even though you are submitting photos of your work, it is still a good idea to complete your work in pencil.

6) Chromebook. This is probably the most important item. Since this is a virtual class, you will need your school-issued Chromebook. While you can use another computer for most activities, you will be asked to complete tasks that can only be done on your Chromebook. As a virtual student, you can get technical assistance with this Chromebook following the steps in the graphic below.

ALSO RECOMMENDED: Scientific or graphing calculator. You will need some kind of calculator separate from the calculator app on your Chromebook. It does not have to be fancy (if just needs to handle square roots, SIN, COS, and TAN). If you are planning on taking the SAT or ACT, I would plan on buying a graphing calculator since you will need to use one on those tests. If you want to go the inexpensive route, Apple and Android phones are equipped with pretty good scientific calculators. There are free calculator apps that you can download that are a little more powerful, and I will show those to your student during the first week of class.
