Charlotte Hatch and Margaret Bertoni of the Greensboro Fencing Club competed in the Epee Regional in Georgia last weekend. Both participants are 12 years old. Charlotte took third place in the Y12 women’s epee event, and Margret took first place.

Margret then competed in the women’s Y14 event and again took first place.

Congratulations to these young North Carolina Fencers!

Welcome to Proehilific Park!

The Downtown Fencing Club, (formerly a program of the Downtown YWCA) is pleased to announce our becoming a member of Proehilific Park!  With a spiffy new location, we needed a spiffy new name, so the The Downtown Fencing Club is now "Greensboro Fencers".  Same great coaching staff, whole new look.  We are hoping to bring in some web talent in the coming weeks to give our web presence a great new look as well.

Chat Feature

posted ‎‎Apr 9, 2009 8:16 AM‎‎ by woody cavenaugh

We are experimenting with the "chat with a coach" feature on the left hand navigation.
We have learned that this won't work if the coach is using his Blackbery to chat with.
That means that the coach has to be sitting in front of their computer, with his chat client up at the time.
This tool may fall into the cool, but not very practical category.

The Hunt For Space Update

We have a couple of leads, with some great organizations that are very interested in being our new home.  If we end up in a location that is no longer in downtown Greensboro, we will have to choose a new club name.  Keep your thinking caps on, and visit the forms with your ideas!

All Hands On Deck Meeting

posted ‎‎Mar 11, 2009 6:03 AM‎‎ by woody cavenaugh

In 1998, Dr. Sally Robinson retired from her teaching position in Exercise and Sports Science at UNCG. She approached the YWCA with the idea of creating a fencing program as a program of the Y.

The YWCA embraced the idea, and with no equipment, she started teaching classes using rolled up newspapers and safety goggles. The money each class generated went directly into purchasing equipment. She never accepted pay for her work, and the YWCA never gave her more than the space to work in.

Eleven years later, the Downtown Fencing Club has gained five additional USFA certified coaches, all the equipment we use in our classes, parts to maintain it all, and three electric scoring systems making us capable of holding small tournaments.

Unfortunately, the YWCA has fallen on hard times, which you may have seen reports about in the local papers and on TV. Because of this every fitness program except for fencing will end on March 21st. Fencing has been allowed to stay on through the end of the semester on May 29th.

At the end of May we will lose our affiliation with the YWCA and our space, but we will still have our coaches, our equipment, and most importantly YOU.
