Michael and Eleanor Gorey's fifth child, Archibald, was born at Ballarat in April 1921. He had a club foot, faulty kidneys and suffered a chronic bladder disorder.
Despite his ailments, Arch was a happy person who was especially popular with his younger brothers and sisters. He was a keen Carlton supporter, a passion which he passed onto his brother Peter.
He had a great sense of humor and was very close to his brother Michael. Their brother Dan told Peter that Arch used to be Mick's "royal aide" in a role-playing game on the farm at Fumina.
Mick would gather the younger ones in front of him, and then sitting on an upturned bucket with a bag draped over his shoulder and a stick representing the royal sceptre, Mick would proclaim himself king.
"Bow done you slaves, bow down," he would roar. The "slaves" would dutifully prostrate themselves in front of him. Then Mick, with Archie the royal aide nodding wisely at his side, informed the salves he expected them to work diligently, or the king would be very displeased.
Arch was unable to contribute much to work around the house, but played his part in family life. After the devastating fire of 1939 he stayed with his father and brother Jim to help rebuild the home at Fumina while the other children went to relatives.
Arch was a hard worker within his limitations. He once spent several weeks sawing up a log he called "the enemy".
His sister Mary recalled that Arch used to "supervise" his younger sisters, Noreen and Nell, while they did chores in the kitchen. They each had to clean up half the room. Arch used to draw a line down the middle and make sure they both did no more nor less than required.
"He had a great sense of humor and was very good at settling childish disputes," Noreen said.
"It was a great honor to do the running for him when the family played cricket."
Arch's mum, Eleanor, used to tell the younger ones of her 12 children that if they weren't good she'd send for a man to come and take them away.
After issuing this warning one day, by chance a man pulled up in a truck. Arch told the kids this was the man mum had been talking about, so they'd better make themselves scarce.
The terrified kids fled into the house and hid under a bed. The man in the truck turned out to be a linoleum layer and started taking measurements on the floor in the very room where the kids were hiding. He was down on his knees with a tape measure when Dan was suddenly pushed out from under the bed. Margaret and Jack had apparently decided their brother could be sacrificed. Arch was standing by in silent mirth.
Arch used to entertain with phantom football calls, which Carlton always won, and phantom race calls.
He used to say that Greasy Pig had slipped away at the turn and would take some catching. Before the race he would announce that Itchy Bum had been scratched and Rotten Tooth withdrawn by order of the stewards.
His death was another sad blow for his parents, who had already lost two of their 12 children.
