FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GoingEverGREEN
Promotes Green Science and Education with the Department of
Energy.
SAN JOSE, CA, February
24, 2009 – San Jose non-profit GoingEverGREEN welcomes the Department
of Energy’s Renewable Energy and Efficiency Education on Wheels (RnE2EW,
pronounced “renew”) van. The RnE2EW van, a cooperative
project between the Department of Energy, the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory, Midwest Research Institute, and BP America, travels the
western United States educating students, teachers, and communities
in renewable energy and efficiency sciences (see more at www.rne2ew.org).
GoingEverGREEN, in partnership with the Evergreen Elementary School
District (ESD) and the Center for Research in Vocational Education (CRVE),
has arranged for the van’s visit to ESD’s middle schools during
the annual science fair the week of March 9th.
“GoingEverGREEN aims to help
Evergreen lead the way in adopting clean, green lifestyles,” said
Pat Waite, Chairman of the Board of GoingEverGREEN. “The RnE2EW
van is a fantastic way to increase our community’s awareness of green
lifestyles, technology, and career options, and also helps highlight
San Jose’s Green Initiative.”
The van will be at Leyva Middle
School on Monday, March 9th, Chaboya Middle School on Tuesday,
March 10th, and Quimby Oak Middle School on Wednesday, March
11th. On Saturday morning, March 14th, it will
be on display at the ESD science fair. “The timing couldn’t be better,”
commented Kathy Gomez, Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services
at ESD. “This will bring focus on and excitement for our science fair,”
she continued. “We see this van as an outstanding resource of scientific
and technical training for our teaching staff.”
The RnE2EW van is
also scheduled for Independence High School on Thursday, March 12th
and Friday, March 13th. The van’s stay in San Jose concludes
Saturday afternoon with a community event at the East Valley YMCA. Invitations
to the final event have been extended to numerous civic, educational
and business leaders.
“This is a big step for our
community,” observed Mike Alvarado, Vice Chair and President of GoingEverGREEN.
“An outcome of our educational partnership with CRVE, it exposes our
children to the science behind alternative energy. It’s also an excellent
opportunity for teachers to learn innovative ways of integrating green
thinking into their classrooms.”

GoingEverGREEN Background:
Last summer saw the creation
of a new community initiative focused on a clean, green future for Evergreen.
GoingEverGREEN, as it has come to be known, started with a mission to
encourage community adoption of green lifestyles, technology, and career
options. Their first project brought volume pricing on solar panel installation
to interested residents. Since then, GoingEverGREEN has added educational
partnerships to its repertoire.
A primary concern is translating
the need for going green into sustainable careers for Evergreen residents.
GoingEverGREEN has launched a career ladder program to help individuals
ranging from high school to seasoned professionals launch themselves
into green careers. The program has a number of dimensions: training
trainers, internships, certifications, and industry validated work experience,
all aimed at increasing our community’s capacity for going green.
Working with the East Valley
YMCA, GoingEverGREEN is delivering what it calls an “Urban Arts”
program at Montgomery Elementary School. This after school, hands-on
class involves students in practical applications of clean technologies.
During eleven weekly sessions the students gain an appreciation of green
techniques through exercises that include building solar powered model
cars and boats, designing and building sustainable eco-houses, and learning
about the intricacies of harnessing wind power.
“The Urban Arts program enables
our instructors to lead students in purposeful, step-by-step processes
to develop first-hand knowledge of energy forms and uses,” explained
Michelle Lennox, Program Director at the East Valley YMCA. “Our first
students have enthusiastically embraced the concepts and are genuinely
excited about the program.”
“We are expanding our program’s
reach,” notes Mike Alvarado, President of GoingEverGREEN. “The Girl
Scouts have expressed interest in integrating it into their program.
We are talking to Parent/Teacher Associations at Evergreen School District
schools. This fall we hope to have several hundred students involved,”
he concluded.
GoingEverGREEN is bringing
the U.S. Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy and Efficiency Education
on Wheels (RnE2EW, pronounced “renew”) Van to San Jose
beginning March 9th for the Evergreen School District science
fair. The van travels the western United States educating students,
teachers, and the community about renewable energy and efficiency sciences.
“We are extremely excited about using the RnE2EW van to
help GoingEverGREEN’s efforts to further San Jose’s Green Initiative,”
said Pat Waite, Chairman of the Board of GoingEverGREEN. “This is
a great way to increase our community’s awareness of green lifestyles,
technology, and career options.” The van will be available to the
public from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 14th at
the East Valley YMCA.
The organization also sponsors
a monthly speaker series at 6:00 pm on the first Thursday of each month
at the Evergreen Library. In March, three business and engineering masters
degree students from SJSU will discuss methods of improving energy efficiency
in commercial buildings. The April speaker, Elisa Peters, Director of
Community Programs at HomeZ, will share energy conservation ideas and
applications.
